76ers shut down Joel Embiid for rest of NBA season due to nagging knee injury

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has officially been sidelined for the remainder of the 2024-25 NBA season due to persistent knee issues.

The seven-time NBA All-Star and former league MVP has struggled with injuries throughout his career, and his latest setback comes after months of attempts to manage the condition.

The team announced on Friday that Embiid would not return to the court this season, citing medical evaluations that determined he was unable to play.

The decision was made in consultation with specialists, with the focus now shifting toward his long-term health and recovery.

A Season of Struggles

Embiid has been dealing with a left knee injury for much of the season, and despite undergoing a procedure in February, he never fully regained his previous form.

Throughout the year, the 76ers and their medical staff worked to manage the swelling and pain, but the condition worsened, leading to the difficult decision to shut him down for the rest of the season.

The team released a statement explaining the reasoning behind the move, emphasizing that ensuring Embiid’s health remains the priority. They also confirmed that they are working closely with medical professionals to determine the best course of action for his treatment and rehabilitation.

A Career Marred by Injuries

Since being selected third overall in the 2014 NBA Draft, Embiid’s career has been defined by both dominance on the court and frequent injuries. He missed his first two seasons in the NBA due to foot injuries and has continued to deal with various physical setbacks throughout his career.

By the end of this season, Embiid will have played in just 452 of a possible 883 regular-season games since joining the league—a statistic that highlights his ongoing battle with injuries.

Despite the challenges, Embiid has cemented himself as one of the most dominant players in the NBA when healthy. He won the league MVP award in 2023 after a stellar season, but injuries have limited his ability to consistently maintain that level of play.

This season, the 76ers have struggled significantly without their star center. The team has posted a record of 8-11 with Embiid on the floor and 12-27 in games without him. His absence has been felt both offensively and defensively, and Philadelphia’s hopes of competing for a championship have taken a major hit.

Possible Surgery and Uncertain Future

Embiid recently acknowledged that surgery might be necessary to fully address the knee issue. He admitted that the situation has been unpredictable, and if the injury does not improve, a more aggressive approach may be required.

“I think the straightforward answer is that when you’ve got something that’s inconsistent, at some point, you’ve got to do something about it,” Embiid said. “We don’t know what it is. We’re looking into every option.”

This isn’t the first time Embiid has dealt with a significant knee injury. He played just 39 games last season after suffering a torn meniscus in the same left knee. Despite his injury struggles, he managed to win a gold medal with Team USA at the Paris Olympics last summer.

76ers’ Playoff Hopes in Jeopardy

Philadelphia entered the season with high expectations, aiming to be one of the top contenders for the NBA title. However, the team has struggled mightily in recent weeks and is currently on a nine-game losing streak. Entering Friday, the 76ers found themselves in 12th place in the Eastern Conference standings, making their postseason hopes increasingly slim.

The loss of Embiid for the remainder of the season makes the challenge even greater. Without their star center, the team will need to rely on other key players to step up in his absence, though replacing his production will be a difficult task.

Financial Implications and Long-Term Considerations

Before the season began, Embiid signed a massive $193 million contract extension, further cementing his role as the face of the franchise. Over the course of his career, he has accumulated nearly $266 million in earnings. However, his frequent injuries have raised concerns about his durability and long-term impact on the team’s success.

As the 76ers navigate the remainder of the season without their biggest star, all eyes will be on Embiid’s recovery process. Whether surgery is required or not, the organization will be focused on ensuring that their franchise player returns to full strength for the future.

For now, Philadelphia’s championship aspirations appear to be on hold as they adjust to life without Joel Embiid for the rest of the season.
