Mark Consuelos Recalls the Moment He Fell for Kelly Ripa on All My Children: ‘She Looked Like This French Vixen’

Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa’s decades-long love story began on the set of All My Children, where their on-screen chemistry quickly translated into real-life romance.

However, it wasn’t an immediate fairy tale—at least not from Consuelos’ perspective.

During the February 12 episode of Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa, the Riverdale star reflected on the exact moment he realized he was falling for his future wife.

First Impressions: A Starstruck Consuelos

Consuelos, 53, first met Ripa in the rehearsal hall of the soap opera, where she was preparing for a scene in large curl rollers.

Right away, he thought she was “hilarious” and “adorable.” However, at the time, romance was the last thing on his mind.

“You have to understand my position there. I came from Tampa on an audition that, my agent said, you’re not ever going to get,” Consuelos admitted. “The thought of me making the moves on anybody was absolutely out of the question. The whole thing was absolutely mind-boggling to me.”

He was laser-focused on landing the role of Mateo Santos, a part that would change his life and set the stage for his relationship with Ripa. However, it didn’t take long for sparks to start flying.

A Game-Changing Moment

While Consuelos was initially preoccupied with securing his role, a pivotal moment occurred when Ripa offered to help him run lines before a re-audition.

“She told me to come to her apartment. I’m like, okay. And she answered the door in a robe. I was like, ‘Okay,’” he recalled with a laugh.

Ripa quickly clarified that she wasn’t attempting to woo him. She was simply in the middle of getting ready and hadn’t expected him to show up exactly on time.

Though they were both in relationships at the time, Consuelos admitted that his feelings for her had already started to shift. The first moment he truly took notice of her, he says, happened weeks earlier while they were rehearsing in one of their dressing rooms.

“I remember we were running lines and she had these great shoes on—these heels—with these crazy tight but not too tight jeans that just [fit] perfectly,” he reminisced. “I forget what top you had on, but you were holding a cup of coffee and smoking a cigarette like out of a Parisian editorial page.”

It was this effortlessly chic image that completely captivated him. “She smoked a cigarette like someone who’s been in Paris all their lives. She looked like this French vixen,” he recalled.

The Chemistry Was Undeniable

While their professional relationship was growing on-screen, Consuelos found himself mesmerized by Ripa’s natural beauty.

“I was like, ‘Wow, she’s got really beautiful eyes.’ Her cheekbones are very specific, her hair is amazing, but her eyes and lips were—wow, she’s got great lips,” he gushed.

Though he hadn’t acted on his feelings immediately, it was clear that a deep attraction had already started to develop.

Susan Lucci Noticed It, Too

Even their All My Children castmates picked up on their undeniable chemistry. Soap opera legend Susan Lucci once recalled watching their early audition scenes together and realizing the connection was something special.

“We were all like, ‘Get a room!’” Lucci previously told PEOPLE, recalling how natural and intense their on-screen romance was.

Their electric performances as Hayley Vaughan and Mateo Santos became one of the soap’s most beloved love stories, but their real-life relationship soon became just as compelling.

A Love Story That Lasted

Despite their initial separate relationships, Consuelos and Ripa eventually began dating. Their whirlwind romance led to a spontaneous Las Vegas wedding in 1996, and they have been together ever since. Nearly three decades later, they share three children—Michael, Lola, and Joaquin—and co-host Live with Kelly and Mark.

Their relationship has become one of Hollywood’s most enduring love stories, proving that sometimes, fate works in mysterious ways.

Consuelos may have been laser-focused on his career when he first met Ripa, but destiny had other plans. That one unforgettable moment—when she looked like a “French vixen” with a cigarette in hand—was the beginning of a love story that would stand the test of time.
