Today show weatherman Steve Jacobs makes shock career announcement after his burger joint failed: ‘This is going to be an epic adventure’

Television veteran Steven Jacobs is making a major career shift, stepping into a new role with the Australian-founded digital news platform, LeadStory.

The 58-year-old former Today show weatherman, well known for his years of on-location reporting, is set to take on a dual role

as both a presenter and co-producer for the platform’s travel division.

A New Chapter in Digital Media

Jacobs’ latest venture sees him joining LeadStory, a rapidly growing web and mobile news service that launched in 2021.

Founded by former Channel Seven journalist Cam Price and co-founder Cheyne Wallace, the platform provides news on demand through partnerships with major global networks, including CNN, CBS, CNBC, Deutsche Welle, and Australia’s Channel 10.

The company has also secured a deal with Samsung TV Plus, expanding its reach into the growing world of streaming news content.

Speaking to Mediaweek about his new role, Jacobs expressed enthusiasm about bringing his expertise and industry connections to the platform’s travel segment.

“I’ve got lots of contacts in the travel space from my many years at the Today show,” he said. “I’m reaching out to my network and working to bring in partners from the travel industry. Plus, these are really interesting travel stories that have some real substance to them.”

Jacobs also took to Instagram to share the exciting news with his followers, writing, “I’m super excited to be joining the team at LeadStory. This is a groundbreaking Australian media company with channels around the world. I’ll be presenting news-led editorial stories focused on travel, lifestyle, and motoring. Stay tuned—this is going to be an epic adventure.”

Support from Friends and Colleagues

The announcement was met with a wave of support from fans and industry peers. Australian singer Tina Arena expressed her excitement for Jacobs’ new endeavor, commenting, “Yes, very excited for you.” Meanwhile, Channel Nine veteran Deborah Knight also praised the move, adding, “Great appointment. Well done, Stevie.”

A Career of Many Moves

Jacobs first became a household name when he took over as Today’s on-location weather presenter in 2005, replacing Sami Lukis. He remained in the role for over a decade before stepping away in 2016 to spend more time with his family. He later took up the weather presenting spot on Weekend Today in 2017 before briefly returning to Today in January 2019. However, his second stint on the morning show was short-lived, as he was replaced by Tim Davies in December of that same year.

Beyond television, Jacobs also dabbled in radio, hosting a breakfast program for 2UE from April 2020 until January 2022. More recently, he re-entered the TV world in September 2024 as a presenter for Sky News Weather.

An Unexpected Foray into the Restaurant Industry

While Jacobs has built his career in television and radio, he also tried his hand at the hospitality business. In December 2023, he partnered with restaurateur Tony Gosden to open Bonditony’s Burger Joint in Sydney’s Enmore neighborhood. However, the venture struggled in a challenging economic climate. By December 2024, the restaurant was forced to close its doors due to financial pressures brought on by the rising cost of living and a tough market for small businesses.

A sign posted on the shuttered venue read: “Thanks for all the support. Gonna go back to one store… less stress. Love, Tony and Steve.”

Looking Ahead

Despite the setback in the hospitality industry, Jacobs’ return to media through LeadStory signals a fresh start in a field where he has built an impressive career. His extensive experience in broadcasting, along with his strong connections in the travel industry, positions him well for success in this new role.

As he embarks on this next chapter, Jacobs remains focused on sharing engaging travel stories with audiences worldwide. With LeadStory’s growing presence in the digital news landscape, his new position could prove to be a perfect fit, blending his passion for storytelling with his well-established expertise in the industry.
