During a red carpet interview at the SNL50: The Anniversary Special on February 16, 2025, Goldberg shared her reasons for turning down 

what is often considered a rite of passage for many comedians. 

She explained that while hosting SNL is viewed as a prestigious achievement in the entertainment world, 

she simply didn’t want to take on the immense time and effort required by the gig.

“I never wanted to host Saturday Night Live,” Goldberg stated candidly. She went on to explain that the demanding nature of the role, which includes long hours of writing sketches and rehearsals, wasn’t something she was interested in. “It required a week, it required you to sit with people and write sketches, and I didn’t really have the time. I didn’t want to do that. I’d been doing that for years,” said Goldberg. As someone who has built a successful career through her own work and projects, Goldberg made it clear that she preferred to focus on her individual pursuits. “I just wanted to work on my own,” she added.

During the red carpet interview, Goldberg was asked about her SNL “Mount Rushmore”—a hypothetical list of the greatest comedians and personalities to appear on the show. Without hesitation, she named Billy Crystal as her sole pick. “Because he’s brilliant,” she added, clearly admiring Crystal’s comedic genius.

Goldberg also shared her thoughts on the political impact that SNL has had over the years, particularly its satirical take on the political landscape. When asked whether the show’s political commentary had ever become an “echo chamber” of sorts—where it merely mirrored the opinions of its audience—Goldberg gave a nuanced response. “I think it’s different at different times. Sometimes it’s an echo chamber, and sometimes it’s something different,” she explained.
