Why Whoopi Goldberg Never Hosted ‘Saturday Night Live’

Whoopi Goldberg, a renowned comedian, actress, and the proud recipient of an EGOT, has been a household name for decades.

Despite her significant contributions to comedy, including her iconic roles in Sister Act and The Color Purple,

Goldberg recently revealed something surprising—she never had the desire to host the legendary sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL).

During a red carpet interview at the SNL50: The Anniversary Special on February 16, 2025, Goldberg shared her reasons for turning down

what is often considered a rite of passage for many comedians.

She explained that while hosting SNL is viewed as a prestigious achievement in the entertainment world,

she simply didn’t want to take on the immense time and effort required by the gig.

“I never wanted to host Saturday Night Live,” Goldberg stated candidly. She went on to explain that the demanding nature of the role, which includes long hours of writing sketches and rehearsals, wasn’t something she was interested in. “It required a week, it required you to sit with people and write sketches, and I didn’t really have the time. I didn’t want to do that. I’d been doing that for years,” said Goldberg. As someone who has built a successful career through her own work and projects, Goldberg made it clear that she preferred to focus on her individual pursuits. “I just wanted to work on my own,” she added.

Goldberg’s decision not to pursue hosting SNL wasn’t out of a lack of respect for the show; rather, it was about her personal preferences and desire for creative independence. While many comedians see hosting as a pivotal career milestone, Goldberg chose to focus on her own comedic voice without the pressure of the show’s hectic schedule.

Despite not hosting SNL, Goldberg has made a few memorable appearances on the show. She fondly recalled the last time she appeared on Saturday Night Live, which was in 2013 when pop star Justin Bieber asked her to introduce him on stage. Goldberg smiled as she shared the story, explaining that it was Bieber’s request that brought her back to the iconic stage. “Justin Bieber asked me to intro him, and that’s how I got there,” Goldberg recalled.

However, Goldberg’s connection to SNL goes back even further than 2013. She first appeared on the show in 1986, not as a host, but as part of a comedic sketch titled “Translator.” This early appearance showed her comedic versatility, long before she became a household name in film and television.

During the red carpet interview, Goldberg was asked about her SNL “Mount Rushmore”—a hypothetical list of the greatest comedians and personalities to appear on the show. Without hesitation, she named Billy Crystal as her sole pick. “Because he’s brilliant,” she added, clearly admiring Crystal’s comedic genius.

Goldberg also shared her thoughts on the political impact that SNL has had over the years, particularly its satirical take on the political landscape. When asked whether the show’s political commentary had ever become an “echo chamber” of sorts—where it merely mirrored the opinions of its audience—Goldberg gave a nuanced response. “I think it’s different at different times. Sometimes it’s an echo chamber, and sometimes it’s something different,” she explained. This insight reflects her understanding of how SNL has evolved with the times, sometimes providing sharp political satire that challenges its viewers, while at other times affirming their pre-existing views.

As for what she hoped to see in the SNL anniversary special, Goldberg kept her expectations simple. “I hope it’s funny!” she said with a smile, underscoring her genuine appreciation for comedy at its best.

Whoopi Goldberg’s candid remarks about her career choices and thoughts on Saturday Night Live show a unique perspective. While she may not have wanted to host the iconic show, her contributions to comedy and entertainment have more than earned her a spot in the pantheon of great performers. As her career continues to evolve, it’s clear that Goldberg values creative freedom and integrity over the pressures of meeting external expectations, which only adds to her legacy as one of comedy’s brightest stars.
