Some Live With Kelly and Mark fans got more than they bargained for ahead of last year’s post-Oscars special—an unexpected sighting of Mark Consuelos in his underwear!

As the beloved morning show gears up for its highly anticipated After the Oscars episode once again,
hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos reminisced about last year’s early morning surprise.
The Reality of Hosting the Post-Oscars Special

During Monday’s episode of Live With Kelly and Mark, the couple discussed the upcoming

After the Oscars show, set to feature a star-studded lineup including Jerry O’Connell, Nikki Glaser, and a high-energy musical performance by Steve Aoki and Lil Jon.

While promoting the special, they reflected on the rigorous schedule that comes with hosting a live post-awards show event.
Ripa shared that fans begin lining up as early as 3:30 or 4:00 in the morning to secure a spot in the audience. That’s when she recalled an amusing moment from last year’s show, which was Consuelos’ first time hosting the post-Oscars special since officially joining Live as her co-host.
Unlike in previous years—when Consuelos had the luxury of attending glamorous after-parties while his wife prepared for an early morning broadcast—last year’s responsibilities forced him to rethink his plans.
“For the first time ever, Mark realized what a big job it is to host the Oscars show,” Ripa explained. “For many years, when I was like, ‘I can’t go to the party with you. I really have to host this show. I’m going to be exhausted,’ he’s like, ‘You’re a real killjoy.’”
Consuelos admitted to previously encouraging Ripa to attend at least one after-party, teasing, “I was like, ‘C’mon. Go to one.’”

Ripa playfully mimicked her husband’s past enthusiasm, joking, “‘Go to one party! What’s the big deal?’” However, after experiencing the demands of the morning show firsthand, Consuelos quickly understood why his wife had always declined.
Mark Consuelos’ Accidental Window Appearance
The real highlight of their conversation, however, came when Ripa recalled waking Consuelos up on the morning of the special and taking him to their hotel room window. She wanted him to see firsthand just how many fans had already lined up outside, eagerly waiting for the live taping.
“He said, ‘Where are they going to put all those people?’ And I said, ‘It’s a pretty big theater,’” Ripa recounted, referencing the legendary Dolby Theatre, where both the Academy Awards and Live’s post-Oscars show take place.
That’s when Consuelos made an unexpected discovery—one that also left some early-rising fans with quite the memory.
“I was in my underwear. I made eye contact with a few people,” Consuelos confessed, much to the amusement of the audience.

Ripa confirmed the moment, laughing as she added, “People were waving to Mark in his underwear.”
A Pre-Show Spectacle Like No Other
The unexpected sighting quickly became a running joke between the couple.
“So come to see Mark in his underwear,” Ripa quipped, suggesting that fans attending the early morning taping might get an even bigger show than they anticipated.
Consuelos, always a good sport, added, “If you’re in line, just look up. You might get a surprise.”
Ripa took the humor a step further, teasing, “You do get a full show before the show. It’s amazing. I’m in my mouth guard, Mark’s in his underpants.”

The Charm of Live With Kelly and Mark
Moments like these are exactly why Live With Kelly and Mark remains one of the most beloved daytime talk shows. With this year’s After the Oscars special set to be another high-energy event, fans can only hope for more hilarious, unplanned moments—though perhaps not another accidental underwear sighting!
