Tiger Woods Has ‘Most Embarrassing Moment’ of His Golfing Career During TGL Match

Tiger Woods and his team faced a memorable blunder during a recent TGL match, leaving Woods embarrassed and his teammates in fits of laughter.

The event, which took place on Tuesday, February 18, at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, saw Woods make an unusual mistake

that left him questioning his own judgment and prompting his teammates to fall to the ground in amusement.

Woods, 49, was tasked with hitting a shot from 199 yards away from the hole.

To ensure the correct yardage, he asked his friend Rob McNamara to double-check the distance.

In a typical golfing fashion, McNamara relayed the yardage as “99,” dropping the “1” in accordance with golf conventions.

Woods, however, misunderstood the information, assuming the distance was only 99 yards.

The result? A wedge shot that came up a full 100 yards short of the flag. As Woods walked up to assess the shot, his teammates—Kevin Kisner and Tom Kim—couldn’t hold back their laughter. Kisner and Kim were seen in hysterics as Woods appeared genuinely confused. “You said ‘99 yards,’” Woods remarked, hoping to clarify the situation. It wasn’t until his teammates confirmed the correct distance of 199 yards that Woods’ expression shifted to one of mild disbelief.

Woods, ever the professional, took the blunder in stride, acknowledging the mistake on the ESPN broadcast. “One of the most embarrassing moments of my golf career just happened,” he admitted. “I just screwed up. That was embarrassing.” His self-deprecating comments added to the humor of the situation, and his teammates continued to laugh as Woods shook his head in amusement at his error.

This TGL match was Woods’ first competitive appearance since the passing of his mother, Kultida Woods, on February 4. The grief of losing his mother weighed heavily on him, as he shared during a previous appearance at the 2025 Genesis Invitational. “It’s been a tough process to go through,” Woods reflected, noting the immense support he received from his family and fellow golfers during this difficult time. He explained how his mother had always been a dedicated part of his golfing journey, attending every junior event and meticulously tracking his performance. “Losing her has been a very hard and difficult process to go through,” Woods said, showing the emotional toll the loss had taken on him.

Despite the personal challenges Woods faced, his team’s performance at the TGL event wasn’t ideal. The Jupiter Links team, which Woods was a part of, ended up losing to New York Golf Club with a score of 10-3. While Woods took his mistake in stride, his teammates couldn’t help but poke fun at the situation. Matt Fitzpatrick, a member of the winning team, commented on their strong performance, saying, “I feel like we did play really well tonight. Just want to do a bit more of that next Monday and hopefully jump up a couple more spots.”

TGL, or Tomorrow’s Golf League, which was co-founded by Woods and fellow golf legend Rory McIlroy, is an innovative new league that blends technology with golf. The league features a custom-built arena designed to provide an interactive experience for fans. Although the cutting-edge technology was meant to enhance the golfing experience, it didn’t seem to give Woods and his teammates the edge they needed that night.

Even the PGA Tour couldn’t resist making light of Woods’ mistake, sharing a playful post on Instagram that read, “Tough mixup for Tiger and @JupiterLinksGC.” Despite the blunder and loss, Woods’ ability to laugh at himself and remain gracious in the face of embarrassment shows why he continues to be beloved by fans and teammates alike.

The event serves as a reminder that even the best players in the world have moments of vulnerability. As TGL progresses toward its semifinals, with the next round set to take place on March 17, Woods and his team will undoubtedly use the experience as motivation to improve their game. In the meantime, fans can look forward to more high-tech golf action and moments of humor as the league continues to redefine the sport.
