Pete Wicks Breaks Silence on Strictly Curse After Split from I’m A Celeb’s Maura Higgins
Pete Wicks has finally spoken out about the so-called Strictly curse following his recent breakup with former Love Island star Maura Higgins.
The reality TV star, 37, and Maura, 34, were in a relationship while he participated in the BBC dance competition, but they have since gone their separate ways.
The couple, who had known each other for six years before dating, kept their romance relatively private.
However, after their split, Maura made a pointed remark when asked about Pete’s whereabouts on Valentine’s Day,
saying, “I don’t know, probably cheating.” Her comment raised eyebrows and sparked speculation about the cause of their breakup.
Pete, who was partnered with professional dancer Jowita Przystał on the show, addressed the Strictly curse on his podcast, Staying Relevant, with co-host Sam Thompson.
The so-called curse refers to the tendency of contestants’ relationships to fall apart during or after their time on the show, often due to the intense training schedules and close connections formed with dance partners.
Speaking on the podcast, Pete acknowledged that Strictly can put pressure on relationships but dismissed the idea that the show is to blame for every breakup. He explained, “You don’t actually see everyone all week. You only see them on a Friday and Saturday, but of course, you spend a lot of time with your dance partner. You do become incredibly close, but that could happen on any show.”
He went on to say, “It’s quite intense, but I don’t think it’s just about being physically close. It’s more about sharing an experience that only you and your dance partner understand. It’s a unique journey that can bring people together.”
Pete also pointed out that many other reality shows, such as I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, have led to relationships and breakups, but Strictly has become notorious for its so-called curse. “The show lasts for three or four months, so if someone splits up during that time, it’s easy to blame it on Strictly,” he said. “But breakups happen all the time, whether you’re on the show or not.”
Meanwhile, sources close to Maura claim that trust issues played a role in the couple’s split. According to reports, Maura ended the relationship after discovering that Pete had been messaging multiple women online. Although the messages were said to be innocent, Maura allegedly felt uncomfortable with the situation and decided she couldn’t continue the relationship.
A source revealed, “Maura was suspicious of Pete’s behavior and questioned whether he was being completely honest with her. She saw messages on his phone and knew she wouldn’t be able to trust him fully. Even if the conversations were harmless, it was enough to make her feel uneasy.”
Despite the split, Maura has chosen to remain tight-lipped about the details, preferring to move on without bad-mouthing Pete. “She’s focusing on herself and her future,” the source added. “She’s not going to dwell on the past or speak negatively about Pete, but she’s made her decision and is ready to move forward.”
The breakup marks the end of a brief but highly talked-about romance between the two reality stars. While Pete has now broken his silence on the Strictly curse, it remains to be seen whether his time on the show truly played a role in his split with Maura—or if their relationship simply wasn’t meant to last.
