Nicole Kidman reveals unexpected health struggle that left her ‘terrified’ after giving birth

Nicole Kidman Opens Up About Terrifying Health Struggle After Giving Birth

Nicole Kidman is shedding light on a deeply personal and frightening experience she faced after giving birth—struggling to produce breast milk.

In a recent interview with Time magazine, the 57-year-old Oscar-winning actress shared how she felt “terrified” when she realized she was unable to breastfeed her newborn.

She recalled turning to her younger sister, Antonia Kidman, for guidance during the challenging time.

“I was so terrified, asking, ‘What just happened? Where’s my milk?’” Kidman said. “I remember standing naked in the shower,

and my sister helped me. She was my source of strength. She’d had five children—she had the wisdom to pass on.”

A Strong Bond Between Sisters

Nicole and Antonia Kidman have always shared a close relationship, supporting each other through life’s ups and downs. Antonia, now 54, is a former TV journalist and a mother of six. She has written parenting books, including Feeding Fussy Kids and The Simple Things: Creating an Organised Home, a Happy Family and A Life Worth Living.

Their bond deepened as they navigated personal tragedies together, including the loss of their father, Antony Kidman, in 2014, and their mother, Janelle, in September 2023.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the sisters lived together in Australia while Nicole was filming her Hulu series Nine Perfect Strangers. Antonia stepped in to help with Kidman’s daughters while her husband, Keith Urban, was working in Nashville.

“We never leave the kids. One of us is always there,” Kidman told Marie Claire Australia in 2020. “When Keith went to Nashville and I had to work late nights, I rang Ant and asked her to move in with the girls, and she did, and brought along her kids. That’s special.”

Kidman’s Journey Into Motherhood

Kidman became a mother in 1992 when she and then-husband Tom Cruise adopted their daughter, Isabella Jane, now 32. The couple later adopted son Connor Antony, now 30, before their divorce in 2001.

In 2008, she welcomed her first biological child, daughter Sunday Rose, with Keith Urban. Two years later, they expanded their family with the birth of their second daughter, Faith Margaret, via surrogacy.

Despite her struggles with breastfeeding, Kidman has embraced motherhood and the challenges that come with it. She often speaks about the importance of family and cherishing special moments with her loved ones.

A Rare Red Carpet Appearance with Family

In April, Kidman was honored at the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award gala, and for the first time, her daughters Sunday and Faith joined her on the red carpet. They posed alongside Kidman and Urban, marking a rare public appearance for the young girls.

During her acceptance speech, Kidman expressed gratitude for her family, calling them “the loves of my life.” She also shared her joy at having her Australian relatives present for the celebration.

“It’s beautiful to have a family to be able to go and want to share this with you, because you don’t get to do that,” she told People. “A lot of the times, if you get invited to the Academy Awards, you get one ticket extra. So, the idea of being able to have your family come to something like this is really exciting.”

A Reminder That Motherhood Isn’t Always Easy

Kidman’s candid revelation about her postpartum struggles serves as a reminder that even celebrities face challenges in motherhood. Her story highlights the importance of support systems and leaning on loved ones during difficult times.

Through it all, Kidman continues to prioritize family, proving that strength, resilience, and love are at the heart of her journey as both an actress and a mother.
