Al Roker Returns to Today After Facing Heartbreak

Al Roker, a beloved Today show personality, has returned to work just days after experiencing a personal loss.

The veteran meteorologist was absent from the Tuesday, February 11, broadcast, where Dylan Dreyer stepped in to cover his duties.

However, by Wednesday, February 12, Roker was back on the show, performing his usual weather reports

and even taking a celebratory selfie with Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts following his team’s recent Super Bowl victory.

A Difficult Personal Loss

Roker’s return to the Today show came just two days after the passing of his ex-wife, Alice Bell. The heartbreaking news was announced by their daughter, Courtney Roker Laga, in an emotional Instagram post on Monday, February 10.

“She was my mother, my heart, and the most loving grandmother to Sky,” Courtney wrote in her tribute. “I was with her for her last breath, and I will carry her love with me always.” The post included a touching image of Bell, who appeared to be receiving oxygen treatment, though her cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

Bell and Roker were married from 1984 until 1994 and adopted Courtney in 1987. Though the former couple parted ways, they remained connected through their shared love for their daughter.

Blended Family and Cherished Memories

Following his divorce from Bell, Roker found love again with journalist Deborah Roberts, whom he married in 1996. Together, they have two children: daughter Leila and son Nicholas. Over the years, Roker has spoken warmly about his family and has embraced the joys of fatherhood.

Two years prior to her mother’s passing, Courtney shared an Instagram post in which she expressed her love and appreciation for the women in her life. “Happy Mother’s Day to the three most important women in my life. My mom Alice, my stepmother Deborah, and my mother-in-law Barbara ❤️,” she wrote. Her words reflected the deep bond she shared with both her biological and blended families.

Roker’s Reflection on Parenthood

Though Roker has kept much of his past marriage out of the public eye, he did open up about his daughter Courtney in a 2019 interview with MSNBC. He described her as a child who was anything but “typical,” recalling the moment she chose an unexpected career path.

“When she was in her sophomore year in college, she came to [my wife] Deborah [Roberts] and me and said, ‘You know, guys, I don’t think this is for me. But I’d like to go to culinary school,’” he shared.

At first, the revelation took him by surprise, but upon reflection, he realized the signs had always been there. “Courtney always liked to cook. She loved food presentation, too,” he said. “I remember when she was 6 or 7, she would go out and pick flowers to decorate the plate. It wasn’t the path we’d expected for her, but at the end of the day, it was better she made that choice and invested in it.”

Courtney ultimately followed her passion, pursuing a career in the culinary arts, a path that has brought her great success and fulfillment.

Returning to Normalcy Amid Grief

Despite his personal loss, Roker has shown remarkable resilience, returning to his role on Today just days after Bell’s passing. His return to work was met with support from colleagues and fans, who admire his professionalism and strength.

Roker’s ability to balance personal hardships while maintaining his commitment to his work is a testament to his enduring spirit. While the loss of a loved one is never easy, his return to the Today show suggests that he is finding comfort in routine and the support of those around him.

As he continues to navigate this difficult time, fans and colleagues alike will undoubtedly rally around him, offering their condolences and unwavering support.
