It was a night of celebration for the cast of Only Murders in the Building!
On Sunday, Feb. 23, Selena Gomez accepted the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series at the 2025 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.
The actress and singer took to the stage solo, as her co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short were absent from the ceremony.
Short’s absence was explained earlier when Martin revealed that his longtime comedy partner had tested positive for COVID-19 after attending SNL50:
The Anniversary Special last week.
Gomez, clearly surprised by the win, jokingly acknowledged their victory, saying, “We never win. This is so weird!”
She then playfully teased her missing castmates, quipping, “Marty and Steve aren’t here because, you know, they don’t really care.”
After a brief moment of pretending to forget to mention them, she continued, “Thank you to Marty and Steve for—well, they raised me. But I genuinely am just so grateful to everybody. The writers, everyone deserves this. And I take it home for all of us. I’m bringing this back to New York for season five. Thank you so much. I’m so grateful.”
Only Murders in the Building Takes the Spotlight
Starring Gomez alongside comedy legends Martin and Short, Only Murders in the Building follows three unlikely friends on the Upper West Side of Manhattan who bond over their love of true crime podcasts, only to find themselves embroiled in real-life mysteries.
In a 2024 interview with PEOPLE, Martin and Short opened up about their deepening bond with Gomez after working together for three years.
“I think it just gets deeper and deeper and deeper,” Short shared. “She is so lovely as a human, she’s so remarkable as a talent, and she just has an aura and this lovely spirit. Our friendship grows and grows.”
Martin also praised Gomez’s work ethic, revealing that she’s “never late,” something he considers “a very big deal” on set.
The Competition and Other Nominees
Only Murders in the Building beat out some stiff competition to take home the coveted SAG Award. Other nominees in the category included:
Abbott Elementary – A hit mockumentary-style comedy about dedicated Philadelphia teachers navigating life at an underfunded public school.
The Bear – A critically acclaimed drama-comedy about a fine-dining chef (Jeremy Allen White) who returns to Chicago to save his late brother’s sandwich shop.
Hacks – A witty series following the relationship between veteran comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her younger comedy writer (Hannah Einbinder).
Shrinking – Starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford, this Apple TV+ series follows a therapist struggling with grief who starts giving clients brutally honest advice.
A Big Night for Comedy
Gomez’s win adds to the growing success of Only Murders in the Building, which has become a standout in the comedy genre. The Hulu series has been renewed for a fifth season, and with an award like this under its belt, anticipation for the next chapter is higher than ever.
With Martin and Short missing from the big night, it’s safe to assume they’ll have plenty of catching up to do when they reunite with Gomez in New York. Until then, the Only Murders team can celebrate their well-earned victory!
