Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni’s ‘titanic clash’ could hurt best-selling author’s next box office hits: expert

Colleen Hoover, the best-selling author behind It Ends With Us, is finding herself at the center of an unexpected controversy.

While her novel’s adaptation hit the big screen in 2024 with Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni as the lead stars,

the legal battle between the two actors has placed Hoover in a difficult position. Now, the author is facing public criticism for her response—or lack thereof—to the situation.

A Legal Dispute That No One Saw Coming

Baldoni, who not only starred as Ryle Kincaid but also directed the film, acquired the adaptation rights in 2019 through his production company, Wayfarer Studios.

Initially, excitement buzzed around the project, especially with Lively taking on the role of Lily Bloom. However, rumors of on-set tensions surfaced during the film’s press tour in mid-2024.

By December, Lively had filed an official complaint against Baldoni, which escalated into a federal lawsuit alleging sexual harassment. In response, Baldoni hit back with a staggering $400 million defamation lawsuit.

Hoover’s Social Media Exit and Return

The unfolding legal drama placed Hoover in an uncomfortable position. Shortly after Lively’s complaint went public, the author posted an Instagram story expressing her support for the Gossip Girl alum, calling her “honest, kind, supportive, and patient.” This statement did not go unnoticed, and soon, Hoover was receiving backlash for taking sides before the full details of the legal dispute were known.

Following the mounting tension, Hoover deactivated her Instagram account. When she eventually returned to the platform, fans noticed that she had removed photos featuring Lively and Baldoni, fueling speculation about her stance on the issue.

Fans Demand an Apology

Hoover’s return to social media did not go smoothly. Many of her followers flooded her page with demands for an apology to Baldoni, accusing her of unfairly supporting Lively without considering the broader context. Some even threatened to boycott her future projects, including the upcoming film adaptation of Verity and Regretting You, which stars Allison Williams, McKenna Grace, and Dave Franco.

One Instagram user wrote, “Your silence is deafening. The fact you haven’t apologized to JB yet is astounding.” Another added, “If you were falsely accused of sexual harassment and then blackmailed, wouldn’t you want someone to stand by you? Maybe admitting you were wrong is the least you could do.”

The controversy surrounding Hoover has left many questioning how her reputation will be affected. With a devoted readership and multiple film adaptations in the works, the long-term impact remains uncertain.

Experts Weigh In

Public relations experts have weighed in on Hoover’s predicament, offering advice on how she should navigate the backlash. Ryan McCormick, a reputation management specialist, suggested that Hoover should distance herself from the feud entirely. “I don’t foresee any way that Hoover’s career is not affected in some way by Lively and Baldoni’s war,” he told Fox News Digital. “However, she had nothing to do with this titanic clash. Her best move is to remain neutral and avoid commenting further.”

Adrienne Uthe, founder of Kronus Communications, echoed this sentiment, stating that while Hoover’s actions may have been a misstep, they are unlikely to cause long-term damage. “She initially backed Blake Lively but has since pulled back. If she doesn’t maintain neutrality, this could impact future projects,” Uthe explained. “A full apology isn’t necessary, but a public statement clarifying her position could help.”

What’s Next for Hoover?

As the legal battle between Lively and Baldoni continues, Hoover remains under scrutiny. While she has refrained from making further public comments, her response—or lack thereof—continues to be dissected by fans and critics alike.

The question now is whether the controversy will have lasting effects on her career. With upcoming projects involving stars like Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett, Hoover’s future in Hollywood is still bright. However, how she handles this situation moving forward could determine whether her audience remains loyal or chooses to distance themselves from her work.

For now, the literary world—and Hollywood—will be watching closely to see how Colleen Hoover navigates the fallout of a dispute she never anticipated being caught in.
