Craig Melvin Makes Huge Slip-Up With Hoda Kotb On ‘Today’

Transitioning from one co-host to another on a long-running morning show can come with some inevitable growing pains—just ask Craig Melvin.

As The Today Show continues to adjust following Hoda Kotb’s departure, Melvin, who has stepped in to cover most of her former segments,

recently found himself in an awkward on-air moment.

During a live broadcast, he mistakenly referenced Hoda Kotb in a segment where she was no longer involved,

catching himself mid-sentence in a slip-up that didn’t go unnoticed by viewers.

Craig Melvin’s Role Following Hoda Kotb’s Departure

When Hoda Kotb announced her decision to step away from The Today Show, it set off a search for her replacement.

Ultimately, the network selected Craig Melvin to take over most of her segments, keeping the show’s dynamic intact while bringing his own energy to the role.

One major exception to this shift, however, was the segment previously known as Today with Hoda & Jenna, co-hosted by Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager. Instead of pairing Melvin with Bush Hager, the segment was rebranded as Jenna & Friends, featuring a rotating lineup of guests and contributors alongside Bush Hager.

This left Melvin with a significant presence on the morning show but also required him to adjust to new transitions between segments—something that led to a momentary misstep on air.

Craig Melvin’s On-Air Mistake

The slip-up occurred during a recent episode of The Today Show as Melvin was wrapping up his portion of the broadcast. As the Third Hour came to a close, it was time to transition to the fourth hour, now officially known as Jenna & Friends. However, Melvin momentarily reverted to the old naming convention, announcing:

“Stay tuned for Today with Hoda and Jenna…”

Realizing his mistake mid-sentence, he paused, clearly catching himself, before moving on. Though brief, the slip-up was noticeable to viewers and quickly became a talking point among Today fans.

How Viewers Reacted to the Mistake

Longtime Today viewers were quick to pick up on the slip and took to social media to comment on the moment. Some found it amusing, attributing it to muscle memory given how long Today with Hoda & Jenna had been on the air. Others speculated that it might hint at an underlying difficulty in adjusting to the changes brought on by Kotb’s exit.

“Old habits die hard! Craig’s been saying ‘Hoda & Jenna’ for years—it’s no surprise he slipped up,” one viewer commented on social media.

Others expressed nostalgia for Kotb’s presence on the show, with one fan tweeting, “It just reminds us how much we miss Hoda in that spot.”

The Challenges of Major On-Air Transitions

Melvin’s momentary mix-up highlights the natural challenges that come with major lineup shifts on established TV programs. When a well-loved anchor like Hoda Kotb steps away, it takes time for both the show’s hosts and audience to adjust.

This isn’t the first time The Today Show has undergone a high-profile transition. Over the years, the show has seen several notable shifts in its hosting lineup, each requiring a period of adjustment. The shift from Kotb and Bush Hager’s duo to the new Jenna & Friends format is just the latest in a long history of evolving dynamics on the show.

Craig Melvin’s Steady Presence on ‘Today’

Despite the minor slip-up, Melvin remains a respected and steady presence on The Today Show. Since joining the team, he has become a reliable anchor known for his professionalism, warmth, and ability to connect with both his co-hosts and the audience.

While his mistake was small, it serves as a reminder of just how ingrained Kotb’s name has been in the show’s legacy. However, as Jenna & Friends continues to find its identity and Melvin settles further into his expanded role, these occasional hiccups are likely to fade away.

Moving Forward on ‘The Today Show’

Transitions in television are never seamless, especially when replacing a beloved figure like Hoda Kotb. Melvin’s momentary slip might have provided a chuckle for viewers, but it’s also a sign of the deep history and impact Kotb had on The Today Show.

As the program continues evolving, both the hosts and audience will grow more accustomed to the changes. And while Craig Melvin may have stumbled momentarily, his ability to laugh it off and continue delivering engaging content proves why he was chosen to help lead Today into its next chapter.
