Zooey Deschanel Explains Why She & Jonathan Scott Don’t Want to Rush Their Wedding

Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott may be engaged, but they’re in no hurry to tie the knot.

The New Girl actress and Property Brothers star recently opened up about their wedding plans—or rather, their lack of urgency in making any.

While speaking on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on February 23,

Deschanel revealed that she and Scott are taking a relaxed approach to planning their big day.

No Rush for a Wedding Date

Deschanel, 44, explained to Access Hollywood that she and Scott, 45, are focused on making their wedding day as special as possible, even if that means pushing back the date.

“We don’t want to rush it because we want it to be really awesome. So we don’t want to rush.

If that means 2025, then great. If it’s 2026, it’s cool too. We just want to have the best time,” she said.

Scott playfully chimed in, joking that Deschanel had “realized she’s stuck with [him], so it doesn’t matter” when they actually get married. She responded sweetly, saying she “would never want to get rid of” him.

Wedding Plans Have Taken a Backseat

This isn’t the first time the couple has spoken about their wedding timeline. In a January 2025 interview with People, Scott admitted that they hadn’t made much progress with wedding planning.

“We’ve just had a lot of things going on,” he said, adding that his “New Year’s resolution” was to “get this wedding figured out.”

Back in June 2024, Scott also gave some insight into what their wedding might look like. While appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show, he shared that they plan to keep the event “nice and intimate” rather than going for a big, extravagant celebration. However, he admitted that they hadn’t made any solid plans yet because they were simply “having so much fun.”

Both Have Been Married Before

Both Deschanel and Scott have been down the aisle before. The HGTV star was previously married to Kelsy Ully, but their relationship ended in divorce in 2010.

Deschanel, on the other hand, was married twice before meeting Scott. She and her first husband, Death Cab for Cutie frontman Benjamin Gibbard, divorced in 2012. She later married film producer Jacob Pechenik, with whom she shares two children, daughter Elsie Otter and son Charlie Wolf. Their marriage ended in 2019.

Given their past experiences, it makes sense that Deschanel and Scott want to take their time and ensure their next chapter together is exactly how they want it.

A Growing Family—With Cats!

While they may not be in a hurry to exchange vows, Deschanel and Scott have already expanded their family in another way—by adopting three cats!

The couple shared their excitement about their new furry friends in an interview with Access Hollywood, with Scott admitting that they “love [their] fur babies.”

Deschanel was quick to clarify, saying that while Scott adores the cats, she’s the one who’s truly “obsessed” with them.

Scott laughed, agreeing that the cats are particularly attached to Deschanel.

“I’ll go in her [office] where the cats are, and they are literally laying all over her. When I come in, they are a little suspect of me. They love her,” he said.

Deschanel first introduced the new additions to their family in January 2024, posting adorable photos of the cats on Instagram. She simply captioned the post, “Cats ftw” (for the win).

Scott joined in on the fun, leaving a sweet comment under the post: “My what beautiful children we have 🥰.”

Enjoying the Journey

For now, it seems that Deschanel and Scott are enjoying life as an engaged couple without feeling pressured to set a wedding date. Whether they say “I do” in 2025 or 2026, one thing is clear—their relationship is built on love, fun, and a shared appreciation for the little things in life (like their beloved cats).

With their wedding plans still up in the air, fans will just have to wait and see when this charming couple decides to make things official. Until then, Deschanel and Scott are happy simply soaking up their time together—no rush required.
