Dylan Dreyer’s role steps up as Hoda Kotb misses Today Show ahead of permanent departure

Dylan Dreyer has had an incredibly busy schedule lately, balancing her responsibilities

as a meteorologist and co-host on The Today Show while covering major news events.

After spending several days in Florida reporting on the devastation caused by Hurricane Milton, she returned to New York and immediately resumed her role on the morning show.

On Monday’s episode of Today, Dylan was back in the studio and took a seat at the main news desk alongside Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin.

In addition to stepping into a top anchor position, she also handled her usual weather segment.

At the start of the show, Savannah acknowledged that Hoda Kotb was off for the holiday, leading Dylan to take on additional duties for the day.

Hoda Kotb’s Absence and Her Upcoming Departure

Hoda Kotb, who has been a central figure on Today for years, is currently enjoying quality time with her family at her home in Westchester, where she moved earlier this year. The seasoned TV host recently made a major career announcement—she will be leaving Today permanently in three months.

On September 26, Hoda revealed her decision to step away from the show to focus on her two daughters, Haley, 7, and Hope, 5, and to embrace a slower-paced life outside the city. Her emotional on-air announcement left many of her co-stars in tears as they came to terms with her upcoming departure.

Dylan Dreyer Reacts to Hoda’s Decision

Dylan was not present in the studio when Hoda made the announcement, as she was in Nashville hosting People’s Country Choice Awards. However, she was asked about Hoda’s departure during a red carpet interview with E! News.

Addressing speculation about who might take over Hoda’s role, Dylan said: “I don’t think if they named anyone in our core group of people it would be surprising. We’ve all filled in along the way when somebody’s out. I don’t know if anybody’s made any decisions yet, but if it’s one of the core group, I really don’t think it’s that surprising.”

While there has been no official confirmation on who will replace Hoda, Dylan’s comments suggest that a familiar face from the Today family may step into the role.

Hoda Kotb’s Emotional Farewell Letter

Before announcing her decision on air, Hoda wrote a heartfelt letter to NBC staff, explaining her reasons for stepping away. In part, she wrote:

“My broadcast career has been beyond meaningful, a new decade of my life lies ahead, and now my daughters and my mom need and deserve a bigger slice of my time pie. I will miss you all desperately, but I’m ready and excited.”

Despite leaving her full-time role, Hoda assured fans and colleagues that she will still remain part of the NBC family, a place she has called home for decades.

A New Beginning for Hoda Kotb

Hoda has been hinting at making a fresh start for quite some time. During an August episode of Today with Hoda & Jenna, she opened up about the exciting changes in her life, including her move to Westchester.

“It’s all new—new kids, new school, new things, new everything,” she shared. She expressed her desire for her home to be a warm and inviting place for her daughters, saying, “I want my house for the kids to feel warm and cozy and a place where they want to hang.”

She also spoke to People about her decision to leave the city and provide a different kind of childhood for her daughters. “I want my kids to feel grass on their feet, play in the yard, ride bikes down the street, and run up and down the stairs,” she said.

While she admitted that this transition is emotional, Hoda also emphasized that she is embracing the journey. “It’s going to hurt a little,” she acknowledged, but ultimately, she knows this change is the right decision for her family.

What’s Next for Today?

With Hoda’s departure approaching, there is still speculation over who will officially take her place. The Today show has not yet announced a permanent replacement, but several names—including Dylan Dreyer—have been floated as possible contenders.

Regardless of who steps in, Hoda Kotb’s presence will be deeply missed on Today. As she prepares for this next chapter, her colleagues and viewers continue to celebrate the incredible impact she has had on morning television. Meanwhile, Dylan Dreyer remains a key figure on the show, seamlessly stepping in when needed and proving once again why she is one of Today’s most valued team members.
