Rihanna brought kids to A$AP Rocky’s trial as it ‘could’ve been the last time’ he’d see them: lawyer

Rihanna made a significant public gesture during A$AP Rocky’s gun assault trial in February 2025 by bringing their two young sons, RZA and Riot, to the courthouse.

This move sparked some public debate, with some questioning whether the pop star’s appearance with the children was a strategic attempt to garner sympathy from the jury.

However, A$AP Rocky’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, has firmly dispelled these claims,

explaining that Rihanna’s decision was based on the gravity of the situation and not any desire to manipulate the trial’s proceedings.

Tacopina, who appeared on The Breakfast Club on February 26, 2025,

addressed the rumors suggesting that Rihanna’s presence with her sons was a calculated effort to sway the jury’s emotions.

“People were thinking it was a ploy, like some sort of maneuver to get the jury to feel sympathy. The jury’s not feeling sympathy,” Tacopina stated, refuting any suggestions of an ulterior motive. According to the attorney, Rihanna’s primary reason for bringing RZA, 2, and Riot, 1, was that the day in question marked the final day of the trial, and she wanted to ensure her children were present in case it was the last time they would see their father for a long time.

“It was the last day of the trial,” Tacopina explained, “She brought them because that could’ve been the last time he’d seen his kids for a decade or more.” His statement underscores the gravity of the situation and the potential consequences for A$AP Rocky, who was facing serious charges related to an alleged gun assault against his former friend, A$AP Relli, in November 2021. Tacopina further emphasized that the couple, while not legally married, has a family, and the decision to bring the children was about making sure they could share those final moments together.

Rihanna, who had attended the trial several times in the past to support her partner, was photographed arriving at the Los Angeles courthouse on February 13, 2025, holding her eldest son, RZA, in her arms. An unidentified woman accompanied her, carrying Riot. The image of the family walking into the courthouse together caught the attention of the media, and many began speculating about Rihanna’s intentions in bringing her sons to court. Some critics questioned whether it was an emotional appeal to the jury, but Tacopina was quick to put those rumors to rest.

The case revolved around allegations that A$AP Rocky, born Rakim Mayers, had pulled a gun on his former friend, A$AP Relli (real name Terell Ephron), during an argument in November 2021, firing shots that allegedly hit Relli. The incident led to charges being filed in August 2022, with Rocky facing accusations of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. However, after days of testimony and deliberation, a jury ultimately acquitted Rocky of all charges in February 2025, finding him not guilty of two counts of assault.

The conclusion of the trial brought some relief to the couple, and they celebrated the victory privately at Gravitas, a Beverly Hills social club. Sources confirmed that Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, along with their legal team, enjoyed a quiet dinner and drinks to mark the occasion, with Tacopina and other close associates of the couple in attendance.

Throughout the trial, Rihanna remained a steady presence by A$AP Rocky’s side. Despite the intense legal proceedings, Rihanna continued to support her partner, even when he attempted to keep her away from certain aspects of the case. Tacopina, during the Breakfast Club interview, revealed that Rihanna insisted on being a “rock” for A$AP Rocky, regardless of his initial efforts to shield her from the stress of the trial.

The couple, who began dating in 2020, have had their fair share of public scrutiny, particularly in the context of the trial. However, they have also embraced their growing family, with the arrival of their sons, RZA and Riot, in May 2022 and August 2023, respectively. Their bond as a family has been evident throughout the ordeal, with Rihanna standing by her partner’s side every step of the way.

Following the verdict, the couple was seen stepping out for a celebratory dinner at the private club, marking a triumphant end to a highly publicized and emotional chapter in their lives. As they continue to navigate the challenges of parenthood and public life, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky remain focused on their family and their future together.

Rihanna’s presence in the courtroom with her sons was not just a statement of support for A$AP Rocky, but also a reflection of her role as a mother and partner, navigating the complexities of both her personal and professional life under the intense spotlight of the media.
