Colin Jost, the co-head writer of Saturday Night Live and husband to Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson,
once went to extreme lengths to demonstrate his devotion—by diving through dumpsters in search of her lost engagement ring.
The 42-year-old comedian shared the amusing yet exasperating tale while hosting an episode of Pop Culture Jeopardy! on December 18.
A Trashy Test of Love
During the episode, Jost recounted the incident, which took place five years earlier
when Johansson, now 40, believed she had accidentally thrown away her engagement ring.
In an effort to retrieve it, Jost searched through a staggering 12 dumpsters. However, after hours of digging through garbage, he returned home to a surprising revelation—Johansson had the ring in her pocket the entire time.
Deadpan as ever, Jost quipped, “It was a great day for me,” highlighting the frustration of the ordeal with his signature wit.
A Hollywood Love Story
Jost and Johansson’s romance began in May 2017 after the Black Widow actress hosted SNL for the fifth time. That same year, Johansson finalized her divorce from her second husband, French journalist Romain Dauriac, with whom she shares a daughter, Rose, now 10.
Two years later, Jost and Johansson took their relationship to the next level, announcing their engagement in 2019. They tied the knot in October 2020 during a private ceremony at their New York home. The couple later welcomed their son, Cosmo, in August 2021.
Jost, who has been a staple of SNL’s Weekend Update segment, previously dated actress Rashida Jones from 2013 to 2016 before finding lasting love with Johansson.
Johansson’s Expanding Career and Upcoming Film
While their relationship remains strong, Johansson is also making headlines for her professional endeavors. The two-time Academy Award nominee is currently working on her directorial debut, Eleanor the Great. The film, backed by TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures Classics, tells the story of a 90-year-old woman who moves back to New York City after the passing of her lifelong best friend.
Interestingly, Johansson’s film is being produced by Wayfarer Studios, which is at the center of a legal battle involving her first ex-husband, Ryan Reynolds, and his wife, Blake Lively. Justin Baldoni, the director and star of It Ends With Us, along with Wayfarer Studios president Jamey Heath, is involved in the dispute with Reynolds and Lively. Despite the ongoing drama, Johansson continues to focus on her creative pursuits.
Colin Jost’s Comedy Career Continues
As for Jost, the Emmy-nominated comedian remains active in the entertainment industry. In addition to his long-running role on SNL, he has upcoming stand-up performances, including a show on March 13 at The Paramount in Huntington, NY.
Despite the ups and downs of Hollywood life, one thing is clear—Jost’s devotion to Johansson is unwavering. Whether it’s supporting her career or digging through dumpsters, he has proven time and again that love can sometimes require unexpected sacrifices.
