Brand new Today show line-up revealed as Danika Mason is confirmed as Alex Cullen’s replacement after he was axed

Channel Nine has officially confirmed Danika Mason as the new sports presenter on the Today show, stepping in for Alex Cullen following his sudden departure.

The announcement marks a significant shake-up for the breakfast program,

as Mason prepares to join the team alongside Karl Stefanovic, Sarah Abo, Jayne Azzopardi, and Tim Davies.

Mason, 33, expressed her excitement about the new opportunity, calling it a dream come true.

Having grown up watching Today, she revealed that she had always aspired to be part of the show.

“I’m truly honoured and so excited to be joining Today,” Mason shared in a statement.

“It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid, waking up every morning to watch the show as I set my sights on a career in sports broadcasting.”

Her appointment is particularly meaningful given her history with Channel Nine. A decade ago, Mason’s first job at the network was behind the scenes, producing sports content for Today. Now, she returns in a prominent on-screen role, a testament to her growth in the industry.

Despite her new position, Mason will continue to be part of Wide World of Sports and remain a key figure in Nine’s NRL coverage throughout the season.

Alex Cullen’s Controversial Departure

Mason’s appointment follows the controversial exit of Alex Cullen, who was removed from the Today show after accepting a $50,000 payment from businessman Adrian Portelli. The situation unfolded when Portelli, seeking to rebrand himself with the nickname “McLaren Man” instead of “Mr. Lambo,” offered the sum to the first media personality who used the new moniker on air.

Cullen took the opportunity and mentioned the name live on Today, prompting Portelli to share what appeared to be a bank transfer confirming the payment. However, the transaction quickly raised ethical concerns, as accepting financial incentives for on-air endorsements is a direct violation of journalistic ethics.

According to the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance’s code of conduct, journalists must not accept money, gifts, or any benefits that could compromise their independence. As a result, Nine launched an internal investigation, which ultimately led to Cullen’s suspension and subsequent dismissal from the network.

The news of his departure was addressed live on air by his co-hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo, who expressed their sadness at losing a valued colleague.

“As most of you are well aware, our colleague Alex Cullen has not been on air with us this past week,” Stefanovic told viewers. “There has been widespread reporting on the circumstances surrounding this, and what I can say is that last night, Alex and Nine agreed that he would finish with the network.”

Stefanovic described Cullen as a great friend and respected member of the Today family, adding, “Alex has, of course, been part of Today for five years now. He’s always ready with a smile and a laugh, and without hesitation, speaking for all of us here, we can say that we are going to miss him terribly.”

Cullen’s exit from the show has sparked mixed reactions from viewers, with some expressing disappointment over his removal, while others supported the network’s decision to uphold journalistic integrity. The $50,000 sum was later donated to charity by Portelli.

Alison Piotrowski Joins Weekend Today

In addition to Mason’s appointment, Channel Nine also announced that US correspondent Alison Piotrowski will be joining Weekend Today as a co-host. She will work alongside Clint Stanaway, Lizzie Pearl, and Dan Anstey on the program.

After years of reporting from across North America, Piotrowski shared her excitement about returning home for this new role.

“After four years of crossing to the show from weird time zones across North America, it feels surreal to be waking up with Weekend Today back home in Australia,” she said. “It’s an honour, and I can’t wait for the year ahead.”

A New Era for Today

With Mason taking over the sports desk and Piotrowski joining Weekend Today, Channel Nine is ushering in a fresh new era for its flagship morning programs. While Cullen’s departure came under difficult circumstances, Mason’s arrival has brought renewed excitement to the show.

As she prepares to take her seat at the Today desk, viewers will be watching closely to see how Mason settles into her new role. Her strong background in sports journalism, combined with her familiarity with the network, makes her a natural fit for the position.

With these changes, Today continues to evolve, ensuring that its team remains dynamic and engaging for Australian audiences each morning.
