Forensic expert shares theory surrounding the ‘unusual’ circumstances of Gene Hackman, wife’s deaths

The tragic deaths of legendary actor Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and one of their dogs have left many questions unanswered.

As authorities continue their investigation into the mysterious circumstances,

forensic expert Dr. Michael Baden has shared his theory on what may have happened inside the couple’s Santa Fe home.

A criminal investigation was launched after the 95-year-old Oscar-winning actor and his 65-year-old wife were discovered deceased in their residence,

along with one of their dogs. While there were no visible signs of foul play or external injuries,

law enforcement has deemed the case “suspicious.” Preliminary autopsy results confirmed that neither Hackman nor Arakawa had carbon monoxide poisoning,

and investigators estimate that Hackman likely passed away about nine days before their bodies were found.

Key Clues from Hackman’s Pacemaker

During a recent interview, Dr. Baden explained that Hackman’s pacemaker may provide crucial insight into his death. According to Santa Fe authorities, the device last recorded activity on February 17, suggesting that this was the moment he suffered a fatal cardiac event.

“The pacemaker tracks the pulse and delivers electrical stimulation when it drops too low,” Baden noted. “That final recorded event would indicate cardiac arrest caused by an abnormal heart rhythm.”

Baden pointed out that Hackman had a history of heart disease and high blood pressure, conditions that could have led to a sudden collapse. The actor was found on the floor of a mudroom with a walking cane and sunglasses nearby, leading investigators to believe he may have fallen unexpectedly.

What Happened to Betsy Arakawa?

The circumstances surrounding Arakawa’s death add to the mystery. Authorities found her lying on the ground in a bathroom, with a space heater close to her head and prescription medication scattered nearby.

Baden theorized that Arakawa may have been trying to assist her husband when she suffered a fatal incident herself. “She likely discovered him in distress, panicked, and rushed to get his medication,” he suggested.

In her rush, she may have fallen and sustained an internal head injury that was not externally visible. Alternatively, she may have suffered a cardiac event due to extreme stress. “At 65, she could have had underlying heart disease, and emotional distress can sometimes trigger fatal cardiac arrhythmias,” Baden explained.

Investigators have collected prescription medications from the home, including thyroid and blood pressure drugs, which they believe could be relevant in determining what happened. The scattered pills near Arakawa suggest that she may have collapsed while attempting to retrieve them.

The Tragic Fate of the Couple’s Dog

One of the most perplexing details of the case was the death of one of the couple’s German Shepherds. Initially, authorities considered carbon monoxide poisoning as a potential cause, but since Hackman and Arakawa tested negative, that theory was ruled out.

Baden believes the dog may have died due to dehydration. “The dog was found locked inside a closet near Arakawa’s body, suggesting it was confined and unable to access food or water for several days,” he explained.

Two other dogs were discovered alive at the property, one inside the home and another outside, further supporting the theory that the deceased dog may have been unintentionally trapped.

Unanswered Questions and Ongoing Investigation

Sheriff Adan Mendoza has stated that determining the exact timeline of events remains a challenge. Authorities are still analyzing the collected evidence, and toxicology tests have been ordered to provide further insight into the deaths. However, results may take up to three months.

Mendoza has also emphasized that while there is currently no clear evidence of foul play, the investigation remains open. “We are confident at this time that there was no external violence, but we are not ruling anything out,” he stated.

A Private Life Ends in Mystery

Hackman and Arakawa lived a quiet life in Santa Fe, far from Hollywood’s spotlight. The couple was last seen together publicly in March 2024, when they were photographed at a local restaurant. Hackman, who had largely retired from public appearances, was seen holding onto Arakawa’s arm while using a cane.

The couple, married for over 30 years, shared a deep bond, making the circumstances of their deaths all the more tragic.

As investigators work to piece together the final moments of their lives, friends, family, and fans continue to mourn the loss of a Hollywood legend and his devoted wife.
