Dylan Dreyer steps up as Today announces big move impacting hosts

Tuesday’s Today show kicked off with a slight change in the lineup as weatherman Al Roker was absent from the first hour of the program.

In his place, co-host Dylan Dreyer stepped in, joining Craig Melvin and Savannah Guthrie to cover for the 70-year-old TV veteran.

This temporary shift came as a surprise to many, as Dylan, who typically appears later in the program

as a co-host of the 3rd Hour of Today, was now front and center for the early show.

Dylan’s presence on the first hour of Today was especially notable given that she usually co-hosts the 3rd Hour alongside Al, Craig, and Sheinelle Jones.

The change highlighted the flexibility of the Today show’s team and showcased Dylan’s ability to seamlessly step into various roles when needed.

Al Roker’s absence came just one day after he, Dylan, and Craig made a major announcement on air. The trio revealed that Today would be taking the show on the road later this month, traveling to New Orleans for a special live broadcast in celebration of Mardi Gras. This exciting news was shared during the Monday program, with Al explaining that the 3rd Hour would be broadcasting live from the vibrant city, known for its festive atmosphere, parades, and unique cultural experiences.

“We’re going to take in the parades, festivities, sights, sounds, and tastes of the city,” Al shared with enthusiasm during the Monday show. Dylan also chimed in, encouraging fans to join in on the fun by attending the live audience in New Orleans. This special broadcast will give viewers an immersive experience of the Mardi Gras celebrations, bringing a piece of the Big Easy to their homes.

Craig Melvin added to the excitement by unveiling the Today show’s inaugural Today Food event, titled Taste of New Orleans. This new event will showcase some of the city’s finest chefs as they prepare their signature dishes for the live audience. While tickets for the live audience have already sold out, fans can still participate by purchasing tickets to the Today Food event, where they will be able to sample the best of New Orleans’ culinary scene.

The announcement of the Mardi Gras broadcast and the Taste of New Orleans event is just the latest in a series of significant changes and developments at Today. Back in January, the show underwent another major shift when longtime co-host Hoda Kotb stepped down after 17 years at the helm. Following her departure, Craig Melvin officially took over as co-host alongside Savannah Guthrie, marking a new chapter for the beloved morning show.

During Hoda’s final show in January, she expressed her full confidence in Craig’s ability to take on the co-host role, telling him, “Craig, I mean, I’m so happy for you. You have earned this. You own this.” She further added, “You and Savannah are going to be magic,” highlighting the chemistry she believes will flourish between Craig and Savannah.

For Craig, this career milestone was especially meaningful. In an emotional moment, he shared how thankful he was to be stepping into this new role after 14 years with NBC News, saying, “I am beyond excited and grateful… I talked to mom and dad yesterday and I’m thankful they’re still young enough and healthy enough to be able to see this.” Craig’s words reflect the importance of family support, and his genuine excitement about the new opportunity was palpable.

The recent changes in Today’s lineup show that while the team continues to evolve, the chemistry between the hosts remains strong. With new adventures like the Mardi Gras live show on the horizon and Craig stepping into his role as co-host, the Today show continues to bring fresh, exciting content to its viewers. As the team grows and adapts, it’s clear that the spirit of collaboration and fun is at the heart of the show’s enduring success.
