A spate of surprise stresses have put the royal family on the back foot.
With the King hospitalised for an enlarged prostate and Princess Catherine undergoing major abdominal surgery at nearly exactly the same time.
In a symptom of the ongoing estrangement between Prince Harry and the rest of his family.
It has been reported that Prince Harry was only informed of his father’s diagnosis in a message from Buckingham Palace after it had been mentioned in mainstream news.
The Telegraph has the story, which would seem to confirm that even major health concerns are no longer sufficient cause for prompt family correspondence.
Meanwhile, the Montecito outpost has been more or less completely silent over the news of both Charles and Kate’s health issues.
The King’s prostate troubles – an experience common among men of his age – were publicly announced at 3.25pm on Wednesday.
This was 7.25am in California, which would have given the Duke ample time to respond, if he intended to do so.
Needless to say, there have been no obvious signs of a public rapprochement; not even a good-will message online.
At 2pm on Wednesday, Kensington Palace made the announcement that the Princess was being cared for in hospital after a successful abdominal surgery. The Palace have also confirmed, after concerns were raised, that the surgery was not for a cancerous issue. A number of public figures have piled in online to wish the King and Catherine well. Among them, Fearne Cotton, Giovanna Fletcher and John Torode have all sent good wishes.
Prince Harry was last spotted in public earlier this week, at a light canter after a leaving a gym in LA. His latest news is his nomination a place in the ‘Living Legend of Aviation’ awards. The shprauncy gala-do is being held on Friday evening in Beverly Hills. In the aviation hall of fame, Harry will join legendary airmen such as Buzz Aldrin, the second man to set foot on the moon and Sergei Krikalev, the Russian cosmonaut who held the world record for spending the longest time in space. He has faced some ridicule for accepting the award.
As the King’s situation proceeds, he has been staying at Birkhall, Aberdeenshire, though the palace have not confirmed whether he will undergo his procedure in Scotland or in London. The royal family as well as the Middletons have been pulling together at this tricky time; with the King said to be in close touch with the Prince and Princess of Wales. William has cleared his diary in order to support Kate, while Carole and Michael Middleton, along with Pippa Matthews and James Middleton are said to be on hand to take care of the Wales children.
Since the publication of Harry’s memoir Spare, relations have been at a true nadir between the Prince and the royal family. In spite of this, Harry spoke in June to American broadcaster Anderson Cooper, describing his desire to find some kind of ‘peace’ with his brother and father.
Harry or no Harry, the London-based royal family have been doing a commendable job of cracking on. Princess Anne has been said to have stepped up to the place considerably; well known as the quiet engine of the royal family, the Princess Royal has become a redoubtable source of energy and counsel for the King and the Waleses. She is just back from Sri Lanka. This very well, since Prince William will be taking leave to care for his wife and children and the King and Queen also look to be out of action over the coming weeks. This leaves Princess Anne and her brother, Edward at the helm of the ship.
Princess Kate is not expected to return to her duties until after Easter; while Prince William is planning to spend a good deal of time with her, as well as being on top of normalities such as the school run to keep things as ordinary as possible for the children. A rumoured trip to Rome in the Wales family now looks unlikely to be going ahead.
A statement from Kensington Palace on Kate’s surgery read: ‘The surgery was successful and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days, before returning home to continue her recovery. Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter.
‘The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.’
