Hoda Kotb explains why she’s quitting morning show ‘Today’

After nearly three decades at NBC, Hoda Kotb has finally shared the heartfelt reason behind her decision to leave Today.

The beloved journalist, who has been a fixture on morning television, revealed that her role as a mother played a major part in her choice to step away.

Choosing Family Over Career

Kotb, 60, opened up about her departure, explaining that her daughters, Haley and Hope, were at the center of her decision.

“I had my kiddos late in life, and I was thinking they deserve a bigger piece of my time, the pie that I have,” she shared on-air.

The longtime broadcaster acknowledged that life is fleeting, and she wanted to ensure she was present for the most important moments with her children.

“I feel like we only have a finite amount of time. And so, with all that being said, this is the hardest thing in the world,” she added, reflecting on how difficult it was to step away from the job she has loved for so many years.

A Milestone Birthday Sparks Reflection

Kotb’s decision to leave Today was not made overnight. In fact, turning 60 played a significant role in her realization that it was time for a new chapter.

“I just turned 60, and it was such a monumental moment for me when I turned 60 years old because I started thinking about that decade, like, what does that decade mean? What does it hold? What’s it gonna have for me?” she explained.

As she contemplated her future, she recognized that this was the perfect time to make a change. “I realized that it was time for me to turn the page at 60 and to try something new,” she said, expressing excitement about what lies ahead.

The Legacy She Leaves Behind

Kotb’s departure from Today marks the end of an incredible era. Throughout her tenure, she became one of the most trusted and beloved figures in morning television. Her warmth, authenticity, and ability to connect with viewers made her a staple in households across the country.

From covering major news events to sharing personal stories, Kotb’s presence brought both professionalism and relatability to the screen. Her chemistry with co-hosts, particularly Jenna Bush Hager and Savannah Guthrie, made the show a joy to watch for millions.

Her influence on Today extended beyond reporting—she inspired many with her resilience, optimism, and openness about her personal journey, including her experiences with adoption and her battle with breast cancer.

What’s Next for Hoda?

While Kotb is stepping away from her full-time role at NBC, she is not leaving the public eye entirely. She has already announced plans to launch a wellness-focused company and app, aiming to help people lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

The project, which she first teased during an interview earlier this year, will include retreats, a podcast, and various resources designed to promote personal transformation. “It’s not like going to Mexico with your girls, which is fun, but something that when you leave, you’ll go like, ‘Oh my gosh, I feel transformed. I feel different,’” she described.

In addition to her new business venture, Kotb has also signed a deal with NBC to serve as a special correspondent. As part of this agreement, she will cover exclusive interviews and be involved in NBC’s Olympic coverage, including the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Furthermore, she will continue to make occasional appearances on Today, contributing segments every few weeks. These features will allow her to stay connected with the audience while focusing on the stories that matter most to her.

Prioritizing What Matters Most

At the heart of Kotb’s decision to step away from Today is her desire to be fully present for her children. Since adopting Haley and Hope, she has been open about how motherhood changed her life, making it clear that her daughters are her top priority.

With this new chapter, she will have the time to enjoy special moments—school drop-offs, bedtime routines, and simply being there for her girls in a way that wasn’t always possible with the demands of a morning show schedule.

“I’ve spent so much of my life working,” she admitted. “Now, I want to make sure I’m fully present for my kids.”

The End of an Era, But a Bright Future Ahead

Kotb’s departure is undoubtedly bittersweet. Fans who have watched her on Today for years will miss her energy, wisdom, and comforting presence on their screens each morning. However, there’s no doubt that her next chapter will be just as inspiring.

As she embraces new professional opportunities and focuses on her family, Kotb is proving that change—while difficult—can lead to growth, fulfillment, and happiness. Whether through her new business, her NBC contributions, or simply her time spent with her daughters, one thing is certain: Hoda Kotb’s impact isn’t going anywhere.
