Joy Reid fired from MSNBC amid network shakeup

MSNBC has officially parted ways with longtime political commentator and television host Joy Reid as part of a broader restructuring effort.

Reid, who anchored The ReidOut, bid farewell to viewers during her final broadcast on Monday.

MSNBC Confirms Joy Reid’s Departure

MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler confirmed Reid’s exit in a memo to staff, acknowledging her contributions over the years.

“Joy Reid is leaving the network, and we thank her for her countless contributions,” Kutler stated.

She also highlighted Reid’s impact, noting that her work had earned prestigious honors, including the 2025 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding News Series.

As MSNBC searches for a permanent replacement for The ReidOut, rotating anchors will take over the time slot in the interim.

Reid Responds to Her Firing

Following the announcement, Reid took to social media to express gratitude to her audience and colleagues. In a post on Bluesky, she thanked supporters for their kindness and encouragement. “So very proud of The ReidOut team, who are truly family, and all of our supporters & friends,” she wrote.

Later, in a recorded Zoom conversation with the advocacy group Win With Black Women, Reid became emotional while discussing the situation. Fighting back tears, she admitted to feeling anger and disappointment over losing her platform. However, she ultimately found solace in the impact her show had made. “In the end, where I really land is just gratitude,” she said.

Reid stood by her outspoken stance on progressive issues, including racial justice and the war in Gaza, and insisted she had no regrets. “I am not sorry I stood up for those things, because those things are of God,” she affirmed.

Rachel Maddow Calls Reid’s Firing “Indefensible”

Reid’s exit has sparked backlash, including from MSNBC’s highest-rated host, Rachel Maddow. Addressing the situation during her Monday night broadcast, Maddow strongly criticized the network’s decision. “I think it is a bad mistake to let her walk out the door,” she said.

Maddow also expressed concern over MSNBC’s pattern of removing diverse voices from its primetime lineup. “It is unnerving to see that on a network where we’ve got two nonwhite hosts in primetime, both of our nonwhite hosts in primetime are losing their shows, as is Katie Phang on the weekend,” she pointed out.

In addition to Reid’s departure, MSNBC has canceled The Katie Phang Show and José Díaz-Balart Reports as part of the shakeup. While Phang, who is Asian American, and Díaz-Balart, who is Latino, will remain with the network, their shows will not continue.

Trump Celebrates Reid’s Firing

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump wasted no time celebrating Reid’s termination. In a scathing post on Truth Social, he called MSNBC a “ratings-challenged” network and personally attacked Reid.

“Lowlife Chairman of ‘Concast,’ Brian Roberts, the owner of Ratings-Challenged NBC and MSDNC, has finally gotten the nerve up to fire one of the least talented people in television, the mentally obnoxious racist, Joy Reid,” Trump wrote. He went on to claim that Reid’s ratings were “virtually non-existent” and that she should have been fired long ago.

MSNBC’s New Lineup Takes Shape

As MSNBC reconfigures its programming, several new faces will step into key roles. Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez, who currently co-host The Weekend, will take over a new weekday program.

Additionally, former White House press secretary Jen Psaki is set to expand her presence on the network, securing a primetime slot. Psaki, who initially joined MSNBC to host a Sunday afternoon show, has steadily gained prominence within the network’s lineup.

The Impact of MSNBC’s Changes

Reid’s departure marks a significant shift for MSNBC, particularly given her outspoken advocacy on racial justice and progressive issues. Her firing also raises questions about the network’s commitment to diversity, as critics have pointed out that several hosts of color have lost their programs in recent years.

While MSNBC executives cite restructuring and financial considerations as the driving forces behind these changes, the network’s decisions have been met with mixed reactions. Supporters of Reid lament the loss of her voice on primetime television, while others argue that MSNBC is simply adjusting to the evolving media landscape.

As MSNBC moves forward with its new lineup, the network’s leadership will face continued scrutiny over whether these changes strengthen or weaken its progressive identity. Regardless of what comes next, Joy Reid’s impact on the network and its audience is undeniable.
