The real story behind Dolly Parton’s ‘open’ marriage to husband Carl Dean – as she is left heartbroken after his death aged 82

Dolly Parton’s long-lasting yet private marriage to Carl Dean has resurfaced following the heartbreaking news of his passing at the age of 82.

The country music legend, 79, had a unique bond with her reclusive husband, who largely stayed out of the public eye despite her global fame.

Over the years, Dolly has shared rare insights into their relationship, including addressing rumors that they were in an open marriage.

The couple first met in 1964 at a laundromat in Nashville when Dolly was just 18 years old.

Two years later, they tied the knot in an intimate ceremony, marking the beginning of a love story that lasted over six decades.

Despite Dolly’s rise to superstardom, Carl remained a constant and supportive figure behind the scenes, choosing to lead a quiet life away from Hollywood’s glitz and glamour.

Though Carl preferred to avoid the spotlight, Dolly occasionally spoke about their marriage, shedding light on how they made their relationship work despite their contrasting lifestyles. At times, they were hit with speculation about their marriage being unconventional, particularly regarding claims of an open relationship. However, Dolly playfully clarified that while they both enjoyed harmless flirting, their commitment to each other remained unwavering.

“He’s not jealous, and I’m not jealous of him. He knows I flirt, and he flirts too,” she once remarked. “Yes, it’s an open relationship—but NOT sexually. I would kill him if I thought he was doing that, and he would shoot me too. At the end of the day, we love each other madly.”

Throughout the years, rumors occasionally linked Dolly to high-profile figures such as Sylvester Stallone and Burt Reynolds, but she always dismissed such claims with humor. She once shared that Carl would joke about tabloid stories, sometimes bringing home magazines featuring outlandish headlines about her supposed affairs.

Despite his wife’s enormous fame, Carl was content with a simple life, preferring to stay on their Tennessee farm rather than attend star-studded events. Dolly revealed that early in their marriage, she convinced him to accompany her to an awards show in 1967 when she won BMI Song of the Year. However, after that experience, Carl made it clear he wanted no part of public appearances. “I wish you the best, but don’t ever ask me to go to another one of these damn things because I ain’t going,” he told her.

Although Carl kept a low profile, he played an unintentional role in one of Dolly’s most iconic songs, Jolene. Inspired by a real-life encounter, Dolly shared that a stunning red-haired bank teller took an interest in her husband, and he seemed to enjoy the attention a little too much. While the situation made her uneasy at the time, she turned those emotions into a legendary song.

“She got this terrible crush on my husband, and he just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention,” Dolly once revealed. “I was saying, ‘Hell, you’re spending a lot of time at the bank. I don’t believe we’ve got that kind of money!’”

While the song Jolene was inspired by the bank teller, its title came from a young fan who once approached Dolly at a concert. The girl introduced herself as Jolene, and Dolly was immediately captivated by the name, repeating it several times and deciding it would make the perfect song title.

Carl’s passing on March 3 left Dolly devastated. In a heartfelt statement, she expressed gratitude for the many wonderful years they spent together. “Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years,” she wrote, thanking fans for their support and prayers.

Carl is survived by his siblings, Sandra and Donnie, and his funeral will be a private family gathering.

Throughout their decades of marriage, Dolly and Carl found strength in their shared sense of humor, which she credited for keeping their bond strong. “He’s quiet and I’m loud, and we’re funny…we have a lot of fun,” she said. “Anytime too much tension builds up, we find a joke to break it. We never fight back and forth.”

Although the couple never had children, Dolly has said she never felt like she missed out. Instead, she poured her love into her career and the people around her. “If I had kids, I would have stayed home with them and worried myself to death about them,” she admitted. “I always say God didn’t let me have children so that all kids could be mine.”

Dolly and Carl renewed their vows in 2016, reaffirming their lifelong commitment to each other. Now, as she mourns the loss of her beloved husband, fans around the world are revisiting the enduring love story between the legendary singer and the man who chose to stand beside her—out of the spotlight, but always in her heart.
