Jesse Watters sparks outrage for saying ‘uneducated’ Palestinians are a ‘threat’ because of ‘explosive’ birthrate

Palestinian population, which have been widely condemned as divisive and racist.

During a broadcast of The Five, Watters lauded former President Donald Trump’s controversial stance on Gaza,

which included a plan to forcibly displace millions of Palestinians from the region

and redevelop the area for economic purposes, claiming that it would be a “vacation resort.”

Trump, speaking with reporters on August 8 while meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan, doubled down on his previous statements,

asserting that the United States should take ownership of Gaza without purchasing it, and force out the Palestinian population.

His comments echoed his previous rhetoric about the need to remove Palestinians from the region. Watters, a staunch Trump supporter, praised these ideas as part of a broader “grand bargain” for peace in the Middle East, referring to the situation as a negotiation involving multiple parties, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Iran.

However, it was Watters’ remarks about the Palestinian population that sparked the most outrage. The Fox News host described Palestinians as a “hostile” and “uneducated” population, claiming that their high birthrate made them a “demographic threat.” Watters’ comments included a shocking statement about the birthrate among Palestinians, saying, “The average Palestinian woman has five and a half babies. The average Israeli woman has only two and a half babies. So, demographically, they’re a threat.” He argued that this explosive population growth made it impossible for Palestinians and Israelis to live side by side, a view that many critics described as a thinly veiled call for ethnic cleansing.

His remarks were met with swift and widespread condemnation. Mehdi Hasan, founder of Zeteo and a prominent critic of right-wing rhetoric, labeled Watters’ comments as “Nazi-level sh*t,” while others on social media expressed disbelief that such hateful rhetoric could be aired on mainstream television. Author and activist Qasim Rashid condemned Watters’ comments as “white supremacy” and likened them to the dangerous rhetoric of the “replacement theory,” which suggests that the demographic growth of non-white populations threatens the dominance of white populations.

Watters’ inflammatory remarks are not new. He has previously faced criticism for his comments about Muslim and Arab populations. In the wake of the October 7 Hamas attacks, Watters made headlines when he suggested that Arab Americans who supported Palestinians should face physical violence. He also sparked outrage by claiming that the American public had “had it with them,” referring to Arab Americans and the Muslim world. These remarks led to calls for an apology from the White House and Fox News, with President Biden’s spokesperson emphasizing the need for Fox News to stand against Islamophobia and hate speech.

The controversy surrounding Watters highlights a broader issue within conservative media, where provocative and extreme statements are often used to stoke division and gain attention. Critics argue that figures like Watters contribute to an atmosphere of hostility towards Palestinians, Muslims, and Arabs, framing them as threats to American values and security. These comments also underscore the increasing normalization of hate speech in some corners of media, where inflammatory language is used to generate outrage and bolster political agendas.

Watters’ comments also resonate with a larger debate around Zionism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Many commentators have pointed out that the rhetoric Watters used mirrors the language of Zionism, which has historically framed Palestinian demographics as a “threat” to the creation of a Jewish state in Israel. This perspective has been used to justify various policies aimed at displacing Palestinians and limiting their rights.

In addition to the direct criticism of Watters’ words, his remarks also raise serious concerns about the role of media personalities in shaping public discourse. The normalization of racist and xenophobic rhetoric, particularly when it targets vulnerable communities like Palestinians, can have real-world consequences, including fueling hatred, justifying violence, and fostering an environment of division. Watters’ comments are a stark reminder of the power of media to influence public opinion and the responsibility that comes with that influence.

As the backlash to Watters’ remarks continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how Fox News will respond to the growing calls for accountability. The network has faced increasing scrutiny for allowing controversial figures to air inflammatory opinions without consequence, and many are questioning whether there will be any repercussions for Watters’ latest incendiary statements.
