Betsy Arakawa’s cause of death linked to rodents, but what is hantavirus pulmonary syndrome?

New Mexico authorities held a press conference on Friday to share developments regarding the tragic deaths of legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa.

The couple was discovered deceased in their home on February 26, and the findings from the investigation have shed light on the causes of their passing.

According to an autopsy conducted on February 27, Arakawa,

a 65-year-old classical pianist, succumbed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a rare and serious illness linked to exposure to rodents.

Investigators found evidence of rodent intrusion in the couple’s residence, which may have led to Arakawa contracting the virus. However, Hackman tested negative for hantavirus.

Authorities revealed that Hackman, 95, passed away due to hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Additionally, he was found to have advanced Alzheimer’s disease, which was noted as a contributing factor to his death.

Given his medical condition, officials believe it is highly possible that Hackman was unaware of his wife’s passing and may have spent as many as seven days alone with her before he himself died.

Dr. Heather Jarrell, New Mexico’s Chief Medical Examiner, addressed the matter during the press conference, emphasizing the challenges associated with diagnosing and managing HPS. She further stated that Hackman’s mental state due to Alzheimer’s might have prevented him from realizing his wife had died.

Understanding Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a rare but life-threatening illness caused by exposure to the urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents. According to the American Lung Association, the virus can also spread through rodent bites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that cases of HPS are more common in the southwestern United States, where humans are frequently exposed to rodent-infested environments. Between 1993 and 2017, 728 cases of HPS were documented in the U.S.

Symptoms and Transmission

The early symptoms of HPS often resemble the flu, making it difficult to diagnose. Initial signs include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. As the illness progresses, individuals may experience coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness caused by fluid accumulation in the lungs. The CDC states that symptoms can appear between one and eight weeks following exposure to infected rodents. Due to the rapid progression of the disease, early detection is critical, as untreated cases can be fatal.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Because the initial symptoms of HPS are similar to those of influenza, diagnosing the condition can be challenging. The CDC advises that anyone who suspects exposure to infected rodents should seek immediate medical attention and inform healthcare providers about potential contact with rodents.

Currently, there is no specific cure for HPS. Patients receive supportive care, which includes rest, hydration, and, in severe cases, mechanical ventilation to assist with breathing. The CDC notes that approximately 38 percent of individuals who develop respiratory symptoms from HPS do not survive, highlighting the importance of early medical intervention.

The Tragic Loss of a Hollywood Icon

Gene Hackman, a two-time Academy Award-winning actor, was widely regarded as one of the most accomplished performers of his generation. Known for his roles in films such as The French Connection, Unforgiven, and Superman, he left a lasting impact on Hollywood before retiring from acting in 2004. His wife, Betsy Arakawa, was a talented classical pianist who supported Hackman throughout his later years. The couple had been living a quiet life in New Mexico for decades.

Their sudden passing has left fans and loved ones in mourning, with many expressing their condolences and sharing memories of Hackman’s storied career. While the circumstances surrounding their deaths are deeply tragic, the case has also raised awareness about the dangers of hantavirus and the importance of taking precautions against rodent infestations.

As investigations conclude, officials continue to emphasize the need for vigilance in rodent-prone areas, particularly in the Southwest. The deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa serve as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers of both infectious diseases and age-related health conditions.
