Today’s Craig Melvin makes ‘big announcement’ as co-hosts show support

Craig Melvin is using his platform to raise awareness and make a difference in the fight against colorectal cancer.

The Today show host made a heartfelt announcement that was met with excitement and support from both his co-stars and fans alike.

On air, Craig revealed that he had designed an exclusive collection of socks and sweatshirts, all aimed at raising funds for colorectal cancer research.

In a special segment alongside co-hosts Dylan Dreyer and Al Roker, Craig proudly showed off his creations, including a unique “sock and 1/4 zip set.”

He then took to social media to further announce the initiative, sharing a post with the caption “Big announcement” and a heart emoji.

His message was a personal one, dedicated to a cause that hits close to home for the television personality.

Craig’s decision to design the collection was inspired by the painful loss of his brother, Lawrence, who passed away from colorectal cancer in 2020. Craig shared that last year he had created a TODAY tie and sock set in honor of his late brother, and this year he chose to take a sportier approach. His collection now includes items that blend style with purpose, and Craig is encouraging fans to support the cause through their purchases. The exclusive collection is available online through a link in Craig’s Instagram bio, as well as in person at The Shop at NBC Studios.

The project is especially significant as it coincides with National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to shedding light on this deadly disease. To further amplify the impact of this initiative, NBCUniversal, the network behind Today, announced that they would be making a donation to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, a non-profit organization focused on advancing research, education, and support for those affected by the disease.

Craig’s personal connection to this cause is deeply moving. His brother Lawrence was only 39 years old when he was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer, following a period of abdominal pain and unexplained weight loss. Despite efforts to treat the disease, Lawrence tragically passed away. Craig has since become a passionate advocate for colorectal cancer awareness, sharing his brother’s story in the hopes of preventing others from going through the same experience.

In a previous interview with HELLO! magazine, Craig opened up about how his family’s loss spurred him into action. “Before my brother died, I became very involved in the Colorectal Cancer Alliance,” Craig explained. “It was very important to my wife Lindsay and I to, not only honor my brother’s memory, but to do something which could save lives and prevent other people from going through what he did.”

Craig’s advocacy is driven by a stark reality: colorectal cancer is 100% preventable. Yet, this type of cancer does not receive the same level of attention and resources as others. “Unfortunately, this type of cancer does not get the kind of attention—and consequently the resources—that other cancers do,” Craig said. His goal is to change that, not only by raising awareness but also by helping to remove the stigma surrounding colorectal cancer. As Craig pointed out, “Nobody wants to talk about their colon or their rectums or blood in their stool,” but he believes this conversation is slowly shifting.

One of Craig’s key messages is the importance of regular colonoscopies, particularly for those over the age of 45 or for those who have a family history of colorectal cancer. By spreading awareness about the significance of early detection and regular screenings, Craig hopes to make a real difference in the fight against this preventable disease.

With the launch of his exclusive collection, Craig Melvin is turning personal grief into action. Through his partnership with the Colorectal Cancer Alliance and his ongoing efforts to educate the public, Craig is helping to bring much-needed attention to this critical issue. His campaign is a reminder that every effort, no matter how small, can contribute to saving lives and creating a future where more people survive colorectal cancer.

For those interested in supporting this cause, Craig’s collection of socks and sweatshirts is available for purchase, and every item sold will go towards funding vital research and support for colorectal cancer patients. With his heart in the right place, Craig Melvin is proving that even in the face of loss, it’s possible to make a lasting impact.
