Savannah Guthrie’s change to hosting role on Today leaves Studio 1A looking very different

On Tuesday, Today had a slightly different look as Savannah Guthrie made her way to Washington, D.C., while Craig Melvin held down the fort in New York City.

This change in location was in anticipation of a significant event – President Trump’s first joint congressional address since taking office for his new term.

As the broadcast kicked off, Craig welcomed viewers from New York,

saying, “Welcome to Today, thanks so much for joining us on this Tuesday morning. I’m here in New York, but Savannah Guthrie has made her way to Washington.”

While Craig hosted solo in the studio, Savannah was in Washington, ready for a busy day of political coverage and major news.

From the nation’s capital, Savannah provided viewers with a live look at the U.S. Capitol, where the President was set to address Congress later that evening.

“Hello, it’s a busy day here already,” Savannah said as the camera panned over the Capitol Building. “Later tonight, President Trump will deliver the first address to Congress of his new term, and it comes amid a flurry of breaking stories out of Washington this morning.” Savannah’s deep involvement in political coverage has long been a staple of Today’s programming, and this was just one more instance of her playing a critical role in NBC’s coverage of key events.

As Savannah prepared for her major assignment, Craig was joined in New York by Today’s weatherman, Al Roker, as well as Carson Daly and Laura Jarrett. Together, they helped deliver the day’s top stories and weather reports to the viewers.

Savannah’s move to Washington wasn’t just for the Today show; she was also gearing up for NBC’s special coverage of President Trump’s address. At 9 p.m., Savannah, along with NBC News Managing Editor Lester Holt, would anchor the network’s comprehensive broadcast. The special would provide viewers with in-depth analysis and commentary on the President’s speech.

Savannah has long been a key figure in NBC’s political reporting, frequently covering major political events alongside Lester Holt. Recently, Lester Holt announced his decision to step down from his role as the anchor of NBC Nightly News after nearly a decade in the position. Holt’s departure from the show, which he helmed since 2015, was part of his plan to focus more on Dateline and other projects. In February, he made the announcement, marking the end of an era for NBC Nightly News. His replacement as anchor has yet to be announced.

Savannah shared her appreciation for Lester’s impact during his tenure as anchor. On social media, she celebrated his ten years on the program, posting: “Congrats to @lesterholtnbc on an amazing decade and the new chapter about to unfold! I’m grateful for getting to share so many historic moments right by your side – always, always the class act.”

Savannah has been with Today since 2012 and initially co-hosted alongside Matt Lauer. After Lauer’s exit in 2018, Hoda Kotb joined Savannah as co-anchor, and the pair became a beloved duo. However, earlier this year, Hoda made the decision to leave Today after 17 years to focus more on her family and personal life. In a heartfelt statement, Hoda explained her decision, saying, “I decided that this is the right time for me to kind of move on. And then I thought about, obviously, I had my kiddos late in life. And I was thinking that they deserve a bigger piece of my time pie that I have. I feel like we only have a finite amount of time.”

With Hoda’s departure, Craig Melvin stepped into the role of co-anchor alongside Savannah. Craig, who has been part of NBC News for nearly 14 years, made his first appearance as co-anchor on January 13. His addition to the Today team has brought a fresh dynamic to the show, and his work alongside Savannah has already been met with positive feedback from viewers.

As Savannah and Craig continued to adjust to their new roles on Today, the morning show remained a major source of news, entertainment, and live updates for audiences across the country. With both hosts juggling high-stakes assignments like President Trump’s congressional address and the latest breaking news, viewers could expect Today to stay at the forefront of relevant stories. As always, the chemistry between Savannah and Craig, along with the support of their talented colleagues, ensured that Today would continue to shine in its important role as a trusted morning news program.

With a mixture of political events, special coverage, and personal milestones, the Today show is proving that it can adapt and evolve while remaining a constant presence in the lives of viewers across the nation.
