For Michael Strahan, family has always been the cornerstone of his life, despite his many accomplishments in his career. 

The Good Morning America anchor, former NFL star, and television personality has always prioritized being there for his loved ones, 

often stepping away from his high-profile duties to support them when needed.

Strahan, 53, has four children from his two previous marriages. 

His children include his daughter, Tanita, son Michael Jr., and his twin daughters, Isabella and Sophia. 

Over the years, his relationship with his kids has been a central part of his life, with Strahan often speaking about the joy and pride they bring him.

In 2023, Strahan entered a new chapter in his personal life when his eldest child, Tanita, gave birth to a baby boy, Onyx. The 33-year-old Tanita welcomed her son with her boyfriend, Calenta Mincey, marking a momentous occasion in the Strahan family. Becoming a grandfather was an exciting milestone for Strahan, who has shared his overwhelming joy and pride about the arrival of his first grandchild.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Strahan couldn’t contain his excitement as he gushed over little Onyx, who is now five months old. “I can’t either,” Strahan exclaimed when Fallon expressed disbelief that the star had already become a grandfather. “Five-month-old baby boy named Onyx, and my daughter’s doing great, the baby’s doing great. I’m extremely happy.” Strahan’s excitement was palpable as he spoke about his grandson, and he went on to share just how much his love for Onyx has grown.

“I look at my grandkid… they sent me a picture earlier today, and I’m looking at him and I’m like, ‘I love you SO much.’ And then I look at pictures of my kids and I say, ‘I love YOU,'” Strahan said, with a humorous twist. “There’s a little extra!” His lighthearted joke about loving his grandchild more than his own children had the Tonight Show audience in stitches.

Strahan continued to express the unique joys of being a grandfather. “But the grandkid, I see him, he eats, and I hold him, and he looks like he’s ready to burp and I’m like, ‘Eh, messes up your clothes, here take him back,'” he laughed. Despite the playful comments, Strahan emphasized the special bond he feels with his grandson. “But it’s a different relationship, and I love it,” he added. “I cannot wait for him to grow up, to hang out, and be that… younger grandpa, I hope.”

The former NFL star also reflected on the moments leading up to Onyx’s birth, recounting how he rushed to the hospital straight from his work on FOX NFL Sundays to be with Tanita and her newborn. “It’s fantastic. I went over after I finished up work at FOX yesterday and I was holding him, and I’m like, ‘I’m going to get you so spoiled and give you back to your parents,'” Strahan shared during an earlier interview. His excitement was evident, as he described the feeling of holding his grandson for the first time as “the most amazing feeling.”

Strahan also expressed a bit of uncertainty about his new role, joking that he didn’t feel “old enough” to be a grandparent, but he was quickly settling into the role. “Everyone is like, ‘What is he going to call you?’ I don’t know, I almost want to do a survey,” he said, adding that he was considering the nickname “Gap-pa” as a playful reference to the famous gap in his teeth.

The joy Strahan feels over his new role as a grandfather is clear, and it’s a reflection of his deep love for his family. “It’s the most amazing feeling, I am so happy for my daughter Tanita and Calenta, her boyfriend,” Strahan said. “Onyx is a great addition to the family.”
