How Gene Hackman’s wife Betsy could have been saved from rat disease that caused her death

The tragic passing of Betsy Arakawa, the wife of legendary actor Gene Hackman, has left many questioning whether her life could have been saved.

Arakawa, 62, succumbed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a rare but deadly disease transmitted by rodents.

A medical expert has now shed light on how early intervention might have made a difference in her case.

A Devastating Loss

Authorities discovered the couple’s bodies at their Santa Fe home, with Hackman, 95, having passed away days after his wife.

While he succumbed to cardiovascular disease worsened by advanced Alzheimer’s,

Arakawa’s death was caused by the rare rodent-borne illness. Due to his condition, Hackman may not have fully comprehended her passing, leaving him wandering their home in confusion until his own death.

Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, a professor at USC’s Keck School of Medicine, has explained that while HPS has a high fatality rate, immediate hospitalization could have significantly improved Arakawa’s chances of survival.

Understanding Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome

Hantavirus is primarily contracted through the inhalation of airborne particles contaminated with the virus. These particles typically originate from the urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents.

The disease initially presents with flu-like symptoms, making it difficult to diagnose early. However, it rapidly progresses to severe respiratory distress, low blood pressure, and potential organ failure. With no known cure, treatment relies on early detection and supportive care, including oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation in severe cases.

According to Dr. Klausner, many doctors may misdiagnose HPS due to its rarity and its similarities to common respiratory infections. The United States sees only a handful of cases annually, with approximately 1,000 reported in the last 30 years. The majority of infections occur among individuals who have had exposure to rodent-infested environments, such as farmers, campers, and those cleaning out old buildings.

Could Arakawa Have Been Saved?

Dr. Klausner emphasized that early hospitalization could have played a crucial role in Arakawa’s survival. “If someone suspected of having hantavirus or severe pneumonia seeks medical attention promptly, they can receive oxygen support and possibly mechanical ventilation,” he stated. “Those who receive early intervention can sometimes recover.”

Unfortunately, it appears that Arakawa either did not recognize the severity of her symptoms or delayed seeking medical attention. Experts estimate that hantavirus progresses over a period of days to two weeks. This suggests that she may have endured worsening symptoms, such as shortness of breath, dizziness, and fatigue, before succumbing to the illness.

Piecing Together Arakawa’s Final Days

Authorities are now reconstructing the events leading up to Arakawa’s tragic death. On February 9, she picked up the couple’s dog, Zinna, from a veterinary clinic following an operation. The pet, a 12-year-old Australian Kelpie mix, was later found deceased in a crate near Arakawa’s body, raising further questions about the home’s conditions.

On February 11, just hours before she is believed to have passed, Arakawa ran several errands, including a visit to the pharmacy and grocery store. She also sent an email to her massage therapist earlier that day but did not respond to any messages afterward. Security footage captured her wearing a face mask during one of her outings, a precaution she reportedly took to protect her medically vulnerable husband.

Arakawa’s body was eventually discovered in the bathroom of their home. She was found lying on the floor near a space heater, with thyroid medication pills scattered nearby. The heartbreaking circumstances suggest that she may have been trying to manage her worsening condition alone.

A Rare and Overlooked Disease

Despite its deadly potential, hantavirus remains a relatively unknown threat to most people. Dr. Klausner noted that because it mimics the flu in its early stages, even experienced physicians may not immediately recognize it. This lack of awareness can lead to critical delays in treatment, as was likely the case with Arakawa.

Authorities continue to investigate the exact circumstances of her infection, though rodent exposure remains the most probable cause. Given the rarity of the disease, public health officials may now push for greater awareness, particularly in regions where rodent infestations pose a higher risk.

A Tragic Reminder of the Importance of Early Medical Attention

The tragic deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa serve as a reminder of the dangers of undiagnosed illnesses. While Hackman’s condition may have prevented him from intervening in his wife’s deteriorating health, her case underscores the importance of seeking medical attention at the first signs of severe respiratory symptoms.

Had Arakawa been hospitalized in time, experts believe she might have had a fighting chance. Her loss, along with that of her husband, marks the end of an era for the Hollywood icon’s legacy. Their passing leaves friends, family, and fans mourning not only their deaths but the heartbreaking circumstances in which they occurred.
