ITV announces Britain’s Got Talent schedule shake-up as week of live semi-finals cancelled

One of the UK’s longest-running and most beloved talent competition shows, Britain’s Got Talent (BGT), is gearing up for a fresh new format in 2025.

With nearly two decades of history, the show has become a staple of British television, producing some of the most iconic performances and memorable moments in TV history.

From Simon Cowell’s signature presence as a judge to dramatic auditions that leave audiences on the edge of their seats, BGT has seen its fair share of changes.

However, this year’s adjustments are set to shake things up in a way that promises to keep viewers hooked.

A Shift in the Semi-Final Format

In a recent announcement made in ITV’s Spring Highlights Brochure for 2025,

the network confirmed that the live semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent would no longer follow the previous format of airing all in one week.

Instead, the semi-finals will now be spread out across multiple weeks, aired on a weekly basis. According to ITV, this change is designed to build anticipation over a longer period of time, creating a more engaging and thrilling experience for viewers.

ITV’s commissioning editor, Lily Wilson, explained the reasoning behind the decision, emphasizing the desire to “hit that family audience.” She noted that by beginning the live shows in February, ITV hopes to sustain excitement for longer, making the live semi-finals feel like a much more significant and anticipated event. This adjustment marks Britain’s Got Talent’s 18th series as the longest in the show’s history, an impressive feat that further underscores the program’s enduring popularity.

While this change might be the most noticeable, it’s part of a larger shift in the show’s overall approach to its schedule and format.

The Auditions Go North to Blackpool

Another exciting change for Britain’s Got Talent is the move of the audition process from London to Blackpool. Traditionally, the auditions for the talent show have been filmed in the capital, but this year, the judges will travel to the famous seaside town of Blackpool. This relocation not only brings a fresh feel to the show but also introduces a new atmosphere for both the contestants and the audience. Blackpool’s vibrant energy and iconic landmarks will surely offer a unique backdrop for the contestants hoping to impress the judges.

The new location also coincides with BGT’s increased focus on making the show feel more diverse and accessible to audiences nationwide. By filming the auditions outside of London, ITV aims to engage a wider audience and bring in talent from across the country, ensuring that the competition truly represents the full breadth of the UK’s creative and performance potential.

Golden Buzzers Already in Play

As the auditions continue, some standout performers have already earned their Golden Buzzer moments, securing a spot in the highly coveted semi-finals. Among the acts who have received a free pass through to the next stage are Vinnie McKee, Will Burns, and Stacey Leadbeatter. Each of these contestants impressed the judges (and sometimes Ant and Dec) with their unique talents.

Vinnie McKee, a bingo caller with a penchant for singing to holidaymakers, performed I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers. His performance earned him Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer. Will Burns, a singer and impressionist, who works as a charity fundraiser, wowed with his rendition of Don’t You Want Me by The Human League, alongside impressive impressions of figures like David Attenborough, Gary Barlow, and even the beloved Ant & Dec duo. His performance earned him the Golden Buzzer from Ant and Dec themselves. Lastly, Stacey Leadbeatter, who sang Leona Lewis’ cover of Run by Snow Patrol, impressed the judges enough to earn KSI’s Golden Buzzer, despite some controversy surrounding Amanda Holden’s comments during the audition.

The Golden Buzzer moments continue to build excitement and give these exceptional talents the opportunity to perform at the live semi-finals, where the competition is sure to heat up even further.

What’s Next for the Show

Despite some occasional drama, such as the infamous backlash against Ashley Banjo’s dance routine in 2020 and Ant McPartlin’s more recent warnings regarding performances, Britain’s Got Talent remains one of the UK’s most-watched and revered talent competitions. The show’s ability to adapt and innovate while maintaining its core elements is part of what keeps it fresh and exciting for audiences.

In 2025, as BGT embraces new changes with its semi-final format, the relocation of auditions, and the potential rise of new stars, fans can expect an unforgettable season. Whether it’s the thrill of seeing acts perform live, the excitement of Golden Buzzer moments, or the familiar faces of Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and Bruno Tonioli, Britain’s Got Talent continues to capture the imagination of millions of viewers across the UK.

With the promise of a bigger and better season ahead, this year’s BGT is sure to be another exciting chapter in the show’s rich history.
