Deborah Roberts, the ABC News anchor and wife of Today show’s Al Roker, is mourning the loss of her beloved older brother, Jackie.

In an emotional Instagram post, Roberts announced the passing of her brother, describing the profound impact his death has had on her and her family.
In the tribute, Roberts shared heartfelt memories of her brother, whom she described as the “family patriarch” and a “pillar of goodness and strength.”
Alongside several photographs of Jackie throughout the years, she expressed how deeply the loss has affected their family.

“A mighty oak has fallen in my family. My beloved older brother, Jackie, one of the brightest lights in my life, has left us,”

Roberts wrote. “Our hearts are collectively broken and hurting today in ways we cannot express.”

Reflecting on Jackie’s role in her life, Roberts wrote fondly of his ability to be the calm voice during family squabbles and his love for family reunions. She noted that he was always the first to check in on her, offering guidance and support, especially in her journey of parenting a son with special needs. “Jackie was our family patriarch. A pillar of goodness and strength after the loss of our parents,” she continued. “He was a guiding force in so many ways.”
Jackie’s legacy extended far beyond family gatherings and cherished memories. Roberts honored his service in the U.S. Air Force, which she said gave him a sense of purpose and pride. “The US Air Force was a calling,” she explained. “A ticket out of small town, segregated Georgia and an opportunity to see the world and serve his country.” Jackie, a Master Sergeant in the Air Force, wore his military identity with pride, a quality that defined his life.
She also highlighted Jackie’s desire to serve others, particularly his work as a substitute teacher in an underserved school district in Columbus, Ohio, where he felt compelled to provide a positive role model for young Black boys. “Jackie even felt compelled to become a substitute teacher… because, he told me, ‘the young, black boys needed a positive role model,'” Roberts recalled, underscoring the depth of her brother’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

Despite the family’s grief, Roberts found solace in remembering her brother’s full life, noting that his dedication to family and service left a lasting impact. “What a loss for us. But what a life of purpose and example,” she wrote. “We miss you so much already. And grieve with Jacqueline, Vicky, Pamela, and Doris. But the unforgettable memories of your full life and legacy fill our hearts.”
The response from family, friends, and fans has been overwhelming, with many offering condolences and sympathy. One fan wrote, “Deb, Oh no! I am so sorry to hear this news. Sending thoughts, prayers, hugs and love. May Jackie’s memory be eternal.” Another said, “Sending you and your family love and condolences. This was such a wonderful tribute.”
The heartbreaking news comes just days after Deborah and Al celebrated the joyous engagement of their daughter, Leila. Leila, 26, had shared photos from the romantic proposal in Venice, Italy, where her fiancé, Sylvain Gricourt, 33, surprised her with a proposal during the city’s annual Carnevale di Venezia. The couple’s engagement has been a source of happiness for the Roker family, providing a bittersweet contrast to the sorrow they now face with Jackie’s passing.
In addition to sharing her grief, Deborah also expressed her pride in her daughter’s upcoming wedding. In a separate post, she shared her excitement about Leila’s engagement, welcoming Sylvain into the family. “We could not be happier and more joyful!!!! Welcome to the family Sylvain! Now let’s plan a wedding!” she wrote.

As the Roker family faces this painful loss, they are also celebrating the beautiful moments of new beginnings, finding comfort in the love and memories that continue to surround them. Through this difficult time, Deborah’s heartfelt tribute to her late brother paints a picture of a man whose impact will never be forgotten, and whose legacy of love, service, and dedication will live on in the hearts of those who knew him best.
