Pierce Brosnan leaves James Bond fans furious after ‘ridiculous’ demand about next actor

Pierce Brosnan has sparked a fierce backlash from James Bond fans after making a controversial statement regarding the next actor to portray the iconic 007.

The former Bond actor, who portrayed the legendary spy in four films, stated it was a “given” that Daniel Craig’s successor should be British,

which has left many fans upset, especially considering that Brosnan himself is Irish.

The comments come as speculation about the next Bond continues to swirl. In an interview with The Telegraph,

Brosnan expressed his thoughts on the future of the role, following the end of Daniel Craig’s tenure with the 2021 film No Time to Die.

Brosnan, who starred as Bond from GoldenEye (1995) to Die Another Day (2002), said, “I thought it was coming for some time,

but I think it was the right decision for Barbara and Michael,” referring to long-time Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

Brosnan also acknowledged that the direction of the franchise had shifted following the 2022 acquisition of MGM by Amazon, which now has a significant stake in the Bond films. Despite this, Brosnan emphasized his hope that the James Bond legacy would be respected under Amazon’s leadership. “It takes great courage for them to let go. They will still have a say in matters, I hope that Amazon handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination and respect,” he explained.

However, Brosnan’s insistence that the next Bond should be British has sparked outrage from fans, many of whom felt that the remark seemed outdated and exclusionary. This outcry has been particularly strong considering Brosnan himself is Irish. The demand for a British actor to take the role feels particularly insensitive to the growing diversity in film and television, where the idea of limiting such iconic roles to one nationality is increasingly seen as a relic of the past.

Brosnan’s statement about Bond’s future comes at a time of significant change for the franchise. With Amazon now controlling the distribution and intellectual property rights of the James Bond films, many fans are concerned about the future direction of the franchise, fearing it could stray too far from its roots. In fact, there have been ongoing reports of tension between Broccoli, Wilson, and Amazon executives regarding creative control, with Broccoli herself famously stating, “Don’t have temporary people make permanent decisions,” a comment that hinted at her apprehension towards Amazon’s involvement.

While the identity of the next Bond remains a hot topic, Brosnan’s comments reflect a broader anxiety within the Bond community about preserving the quintessentially British nature of the character. Brosnan, reflecting on his own time as Bond, said he was proud of his role in keeping the franchise alive after a six-year hiatus. “History has been passed on and I’m very proud to have been part of the history and the legacy of Bond,” he said, looking back on the success of GoldenEye. His tenure as Bond helped rejuvenate the series, which had been dormant before his debut.

Although no official announcements have been made regarding the next actor to play James Bond, the conversation around the role has sparked debates on social media and beyond. Some fans feel that the franchise should evolve and consider actors from a wider range of backgrounds, while others argue that keeping the role British is essential to the character’s identity.

The tension between maintaining tradition and embracing change has been a consistent theme in the Bond franchise. With new ownership and a shifting global entertainment landscape, it’s unclear what the future holds for 007. Despite Brosnan’s insistence that the next Bond should be British, there is a growing sentiment that the character’s identity could—and should—evolve with the times.

As for the future of James Bond, the discussions around casting, creative control, and the direction of the franchise continue. While Pierce Brosnan’s comments have sparked controversy, they also highlight the deep attachment that fans have to the character and the franchise’s legacy. Whether the next 007 will continue to be shaped by the British tradition or embrace a more global outlook remains to be seen.
