Loretta Lynn’s niece Emmy Russell reflects on American Idol journey after elimination: ‘Feeling really upset’ (video)

Emmy Russell is ready to look back on her American Idol journey after being eliminated from the singing competition.

The 25-year-old singer, and granddaughter of the late country legend Loretta Lynn, had an impressive run in the show’s 22nd season.

Making it all the way to the Top 5 before facing elimination.

But in the aftermath of losing her shot at the big win, Russell was all smiles in an Instagram video as she thanked fans for their support.

“I just wanted to get on here and say thank you so much for all the love and all the voting,” Russell began. “I’m just really feeling grateful.

Like, I didn’t make Top 3, but that’s a part of— that was God’s plan.”

She continued, “It’s funny, because before I got eliminated, I really felt like God told me, ‘Emmy you’re not gonna be chosen by America, but I chose you.’ And so, there was no sense of ‘Why wasn’t I chosen?’ I know I’m chosen. It’s like whenever a boy is like, ‘I don’t wanna go out with you anymore,’ and you’re like ‘Okay. But I know I’m loved.’”

Russell and fellow contestant Triston Harper were eliminated during the May 12 episode, which saw them compete against the now Top 3 contestants, Abi Carter, Jack Blocker, and Will Moseley. While their performances that night were well-received, neither garnered enough votes to advance to the next round.

Of her takeaways from the journey, Russell said, “The point of being here is you can be yourself and be successful; don’t run from rejection or pain; and facing the hard things.”

She also cited Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb,” one of the final songs she performed on Idol, to say that she had no regrets about competing or losing: “Half the time you’re gonna have to lose. It’s not about how fast you get there, it’s not about what’s waiting on the other side, it’s the climb.”

Season 22 of American idol will conclude on May 19 with a three-hour season finale set to feature guest mentor Jon Bon Jovi, as well as performances from Nick Fradiani, New Kids on the Block, Jason Mraz, Hootie and the Blowfish, Cece Winans, James Bay, Seal, Bishop Briggs, Cody Johnson, past winner Nick Fradiana, and last season’s mega mentor, Wynonna Judd.
