With a score of +1, Woods stands at T85 while the leading position belongs to fellow American junior Xander Schauffele at -9. This is the result when Wood shot 72 strokes.
However, this is his best starting round at the major level in the past two years. And Schauffele,
with 62 strokes, set the record for 18-hole performance in the history of the four men’s majors, including the Masters, PGA Championship, US Open and The Open.
In his current collection of 15 majors, Woods has won the PGA Championship four times (1999, 2000, 2006, 2007), including the second time at Valhalla.
Returning to this field for the 2014 season, he was eliminated. This time, Woods reunited with the place where he once held the prestigious cup with poor health,
especially his legs, after a near-fatal traffic accident in February 2021.
That incident caused Woods to only participate in two tournaments chaired by him in the PGA Tour calendar and the four majors. As for the prestigious group in the past three years, Woods has been eliminated or recorded lackluster results, especially the Masters team last month.
Because of that, Woods is not confident about his performance at the 2024 PGA Championship. “My health is fine, but my form is not. If only I were as sharp on the field as before. This situation is because I don’t rub as much. I only practice at home and have a few field matches coming up to the tournament,” he shared with the media two days before the match.
In round 1, Woods started from hole 10, recalling the golden age through an accurate putt at hole 13 par4 at 5.4 meters and a shot 1.5 meters from the target at hole 3 par3. Those two phases both brought birdies to Woods. Hole 7, par5, he had a birdie from a putt of nearly four meters.
However, Woods still overshot by one stroke due to four bogeys, including two in the last two holes. Those two times were three putts on the green. “I simply don’t play tournaments very often, I’ll stop completely after the 2024 Masters. Coming into this tournament, it took me three holes to feel it. Hopefully the next rounds will catch up faster. I’ll try to stick around until the end because the major is like this. PGA Championship is a long race, not a sprint,” he analyzed.
After round 1, Woods was far from the top segment because the negative score group had up to 64 golfers, the deepest of which was Schauffele (-9), three faces -6 to rank T2, seven people -5 to T5, still from T12 ( -4) to T47 (-1) recorded 53 names. World number one Scottie Scheffler and defending champion Brooks Koepka are -4, world number two Rory McIlroy is -5.
