Anne Hathaway is happy to talk about Gen Z fashion, The Devil Wears Prada, and The Princess Diaries, but the actor is purposefully closed-lipped when it comes to her kids.
Hathaway and husband Adam Shulman have been married since 2012 and have two sons: seven-year-old Jonathan and three-year-old Jack—though you wouldn’t necessarily know
that by scrolling through her Instagram feed or reading her interviews. In a new interview with Porter, the 41-year-old mother of two explains why she attempts to separate her public image from her personal life.
“I am myself right now, but that doesn’t mean I’m my whole self right now,” she told the interviewer. “It’s something I feel is not just essential for my health—I’m on a team, it’s my family,
and it’s not just about me. My family has needs, and one of the needs of children is that they need to be able to define their own lives.”
Regarding her film career and her family, Hathaway continued, “It doesn’t even occur to me to link the two up, except through gratitude that they serve each other so beautifully.
But they serve each other through me, and not through a space that’s outside of myself.”
While Anne Hathaway protects her sons from prying eyes, she has spoken candidly about her own “complicated” journey with motherhood. “There’s this tendency to portray getting pregnant, having kids, in one light, as if it’s all positive,” she said during a 2022 interview with WSJ Magazine, per People. “But I know from my own experience…it’s so much more complicated than that. When you find out that your pain is shared by others…I just feel that’s helpful information to have, so I’m not isolated in my pain.”
At the same time, Hathaway told the publication that she “didn’t feel fully landed and fully here until I was a mom.”
“It’s not like I was lacking integrity, but it made me want to be completely, on every level, true to my word,” Hathaway said. “And that meant stopping any nonsense that I had going on inside myself. And it’s little breaks that you give yourself sometimes when you know that you’re not being your best self.”
