Tiger Woods is among the prominent athletes to have weighed in on former United States president Donald Trump in recent years.
Woods, who has played golf with Trump on multiple occasions, has been asked about his relationship with the former United States president.
Woods, a 15-time major champion, said that everyone should respect the office of United States president.
“Well, he’s the president of the United States. You have to respect the office.
No matter who is in the office, you may like, dislike personality or the politics, but we all must respect the office,” Woods said back in 2018.
He added that he’s known Trump for years.
“Well, I’ve known Donald for a number of years,” Woods told reporters. “We’ve played golf together. We’ve had dinner together. I’ve known him pre-presidency and obviously during his presidency.”
Trump, meanwhile, took to social media to criticize the media for trying to get Woods to say something bad about him.
“The Fake News Media worked hard to get Tiger Woods to say something that he didn’t want to say. Tiger wouldn’t play the game – he is very smart. More importantly, he is playing great golf again!” Trump wrote on social media.
Trump awarded Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019.
