Seen for the first time since Prince Harry’s engagement to Meghan Markle was announced, this is the woman being credited for bringing the couple together – their so-called matchmaker Misha Nonoo.
The 31-year-old clothes designer was tight-lipped when approached by DailyMail.com as she left her Greenwich Village apartment Tuesday morning.
Dressed all in black, with a $1,000 Rimowa suitcase in tow, she said only that she was heading to the airport.
She was pictured earlier walking her dog – a cavapoo (a Poodle/King Charles Spaniel mix) called Margaret Thatcher.
Until now, Markle’s friend Markus Anderson – a consultant for the Soho House Group and former global membership director for the exclusive club – had been widely touted as the one who introduced them.
But when the happy couple gave their engagement interview last week Markle, 36, let slip that their matchmaker, who they did not name, was a woman.
Now DailyMail.com has obtained exclusive pictures of Markle and Nonoo vacationing together in Madrid just days after Markle first met Harry, 32.
The pictures were taken during a three-week European vacation in July and August last year. Encompassing London, Madrid, Mallorca, and Formentera this was the very trip that saw Markle’s introduction to Harry.
Speaking last year Harry revealed that he and Markle met on ‘two back to back dates,’ in July 2016.
Those meetings are thought to have taken place at the very end of July, at a private members club in London and shortly after Markle had watched her friend Serena Williams play at Wimbledon.
Speaking about being set up with the fifth in line to the throne, Markle admitted to knowing very little about Harry before they met. She said: ‘The only thing I asked her when she wanted to set us up was, “was he nice?”
‘If he wasn’t kind it didn’t seem it would make much sense.’
Pictured within days of those meetings the actress who made her name as paralegal, Rachel Zane, in the Amazon series Suits, can be seen enjoying a day in the Spanish sun with Nonoo.
Carefree and happy – perhaps already smitten – Markle wore a simple black sundress that left her shoulders bare, paired with a white trilby sunhat.
Nonoo wore a washed out denim dress, with a cut away back as the two strolled in the sun, carrying shopping bags after hitting the stores in the chic Spanish city and clearly finding several items to their liking.
They visited the city’s Prado museum before strolling through the Botanical Gardens. Clearly in good spirits they chatted easily over lunch, perhaps reflecting on Markle’s blossoming romance with Harry.
Instagram images posted by Markle show the friends sharing a glass of wine and easy laughter in a local restaurant.
Both women are self-professed ‘foodies’ with a love of yoga and meditation. They were joined on their trip by Markus Anderson.
Nonoo knows Harry through her ex-husband, Alexander Gilkes, 37, a man with substantial ties to royalty.
He knows both Prince William and Harry from their school days at their shared alma mater, Eton.
Princess Eugenie – whom he knows simply as ‘Euge’ – worked briefly as a consultant at his New York based online art auction site, Paddle8.
Gilkes was among the close friends invited to William’s marriage to Kate Middleton in April 2011. The royal couple was also invited to Gilkes’s marriage to Nonoo in August 2012, but was unable to attend the three-day extravaganza in Venice.
Nonoo met Markle at an event in Miami some two years ago and has said that they ‘bonded instantly.’
Speaking to Vanity Fair about Markle, Nonoo said: ‘Her greatest strength is her compassion for others. Much of the work she does is unseen by others.’
Born in Bahrain to an Iraqi father and English mother, the pretty blond was raised in London and schooled in Paris. She now lives in New York.
Her aunt, Houda Ezra Ebrahim Nonoo, was the first female Bahraini ambassador to the United States.
For her own part she has found considerable success with her womens wear lines.
In 2013 Forbes included her on its ’30 under 30′ list of influential young people and her clothes are worn by celebrities such as Minka Kelly, Gwyneth Paltrow and Amanda Seyfried and, of course, Markle.
In a revealing nod to her friend, Markle chose to wear a shirt that Nonoo designed for her first official appearance with Harry at the Invictus Games in Toronto last year.
No coincidence, perhaps, that the design in question is called, the ‘Husband Shirt.’
