One of the more surprising parts of a published chat Anne Hathaway had with Hugh Jackman for Variety, was a revelation about furniture.

It appears that director Christopher Nolan is not a fan of chairs.

Hathaway played Catwoman to Christian Bale’s Batman in Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises in 2012, and also starred in the British director’s sci-fi thriller Interstellar.

The subject of Nolan not allowing mobile phones on set then came up in conversation, something Nolan shares with directors like Denis Villeneuve and Darren Aronofsky.

Hathaway chipped in: “Chris also doesn’t allow chairs.

“I worked with him twice. He doesn’t allow chairs, and his reasoning is, if you have chairs, people will sit, and if they’re sitting, they’re not working.

“I mean, he has these incredible movies in terms of scope and ambition and technical prowess and emotion. It always arrives at the end under schedule and under budget. I think he’s onto something with the chair thing.”

Quite rightly, Twitter is having quite a moment with this.

Nolan’s latest chair-less movie, Tenet, is still poised for release, awaiting the right time for cinemas to reopen following the coronavirus lockdown.

Last week, the movie was shifted again to 12 August.

It follows news that the Cineworld chain in the UK has also delayed its re-opening date to 31 July.
