“America’s Got Talent” has struck gold. The June 4 episode marked a first for the NBC talent competition when judge Simon Cowell hit the Golden Buzzer twice.

Cowell made the unprecedented move after watching Dallas-based drone lights act Sky Elements put on a show that was so big in scope the performance had to be moved outside.
The group featured lighted drones in the night sky that made it look like a space shuttle was taking off that eventually transformed into an astronaut waving an American flag.
The crowd went crazy when the astronaut’s face was revealed to be Cowell’s. The “AGT” logo then appeared in the sky as the performance drew to a close.

“That was unbelievable!” Cowell said.

“I’ve never seen anything like that,” Sofia Vergara raved, shortly before the crowd started chanting, “Golden Buzzer!”

“It was like the moon landing, that kind of excitement,” Howie Mandel gushed. “That was one small step for man and a huge step for ‘AGT.’”
“I loved it, too. It felt kind of like it was an alien invasion,” Heidi Klum said.
After Cowell complimented the group for its execution of the performance, “Golden Buzzer” chants started again.
“You know we keep talking about the rules. There is no rule book, which means I’m going to do this: Liftoff,” he said, as he hit the Golden Buzzer, which has already been used to great fanfare this season by Klum on singing janitor Richard Goodall.

Mandel pointed out that Cowell had already used the Golden Buzzer.
“Doesn’t matter,” Cowell said.
After there appeared to be some confusion about whether he could use another Golden Buzzer, a show producer stepped in to ask Cowell about his decision.
“I just thought, ‘Why not?’” he said. “There’s nothing in the rules that say we couldn’t.”
After he told Cowell that there are rules, the producer eventually agreed to judge’s use of a second Golden Buzzer, which was also extended to the other judges.

“If I have two, you can have two,” he said, prompting the judges and audience to wildly cheer.
Earlier in the show, Cowell used his first Golden Buzzer on Liv Warfield, a singer from Chicago who has performed with Prince.
“I’ve been doing this for a long time and the industry is really hard because things have changed over time, but I continue to push just because I just want to inspire people because I haven’t quit and I won’t,” she said before she performed.
Warfield then put on a soulful and energetic audition by singing an original song called “Stare,” backed by her equally energetic band. The performance wowed Cowell.

“That wasn’t long enough. Seriously,” he said.
“It was like being, in a good way, punched in the face by your energy, the band,” he added.
“All these years of frustration and you come on here and I’m sorry, I can’t give you a yes, I’ve got to give you one of these,” he continued before smashing his hand on the Golden Buzzer.
As for two Golden Buzzers coming into play, Cowell said the talent level is just too good this season.
“We are using more Golden Buzzers this year because there were so many brilliant, mind-blowing auditions,” he told People. “I know right away when I see an act that is Golden Buzzer-worthy. You feel it.”
