Anne Hathaway built a strong portfolio in Hollywood with her leading roles in almost all genres. Like any other actor, Hathaway had her fair share of insecurities as an actress. 

Her fears peaked right after filming Love & Other Drugs, co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal. However, they lasted only for two weeks as she got the call for the film One Day. 

Hathaway shared that her worry came with the territory of being an actor, where a lot of things were beyond her control.

While Hathaway and Gyllenhaal’s film received mixed reviews from critics, the film was a commercial success. 

It explored the story of a medicine peddler Jamie who falls for a young woman suffering from an illness that could eventually lead to Parkinson’s disease.

Anne Hathaway Feared For Her Job Security After Movie With Jake Gyllenhaal

Anne Hathaway gave her best for the role of Maggie Murdock in Love & Other Drugs, even taking inspiration from the works of Kate Winslet and Penélope Cruz (via NPR). However, after the filming wrapped for the Jake Gyllenhaal film, Hathaway worried that she was never going to work again. She expressed her concerns during an interview with Perri Nemiroff for Shockya.

She told the outlet that she read the script for the film One Day after a two-week panic following Love & Other Drugs. She shared with Shockya:

“I read the novel after I read the script, which was in December 2009. Let’s see; I wrapped Love and Other Drugs, I had a two week panic that I was never going to work again, and then I got sent One Day.”

When further asked about her concerns after the romantic comedy film, The Dark Knight Rises actress shared that she didn’t expect job security in the acting profession. She revealed that she was playing at a high level at the time and feared that people would get bored of her. Some things were beyond her control and she thought that she could end up with no opportunities one day. The Les Misérables actress shared with Shockya:

“Worry comes with the territory of being an actor. You don’t come into this profession for the job security and there’s a lot of things at all times beyond your control. I’m playing at a pretty high level now and there’s a lot of things beyond your control. You can be doing fine work and people just decide they’re bored of you and then all of a sudden you don’t get the opportunity to do things.”

She also added that her worries made her appreciate the opportunities that she got. She assumed that the  opportunities were “going to become increasingly rare”, which made her “live in the middle of them every moment.” While One Day was not a huge hit, it is a film remembered for the performance of Hathaway as Emma Morley.

Anne Hathaway Was Reluctant To Sign On For Love & Other Drugs

Jake Gyllenhaal revealed that Anne Hathaway was initially a little reluctant to take on the role in the film. He shared that Hathaway believed the role was too simple for her. However, the Ocean’s 8 actress gave some ideas for the part and Edward Zwick, the director of Love & Other Drugs, happily incorporated them, thus landing her in the role. Gyllenhaal shared (via IndieWire):

“It took her a little while to decide whether she wanted to play the part, because she said the [her] character, the love interest the movie portrayed was too simple for her at first.”

Zwick added:

“It wasn’t fully reading, living and breathing for her and she’s had enough experience to say ‘Well I’m going to give you some ideas and if you’re up for that then I’ll play the part.’”

During an interview with The Guardian, the Havoc star shared that Maggie in the initial draft of the film wasn’t completely there yet. She found that the character had “amazing potential to be angry, funny, smart and incredibly wounded.” Hathaway shared that combining all those aspects was challenging, but it worked out well in the film.
