The actress has taken what she’s learned in her long filmmaking career to create a film of her own.
“I DIDN’T ACTUALLY set out to start making films,” writes Emma Watson in the caption of her latest Instagram post.
And yet, the 31-year-old actress and activist has now turned her talent to filmmaking from behind the camera, and released her directorial debut on Instagram.

The short film — which is set to a narration by the subject herself — naturally focuses on some of the themes Watson has expressed she’s passion about
Female empowerment and the importance of caring for the environment.
Watson calls the film a “love letter” to Webster, gushing in her caption: “As a woman I always found the idea of living alone terrifying… & when you told me you had been living in the garage above your studio to dedicate yourself to what you really wanted to do despite everyone’s ‘good and well intentioned advice’ – was when I knew I wanted to make my first tiny film about you. I just instantly wanted to try & capture who you were & the importance of your work. That’s what feels so beautiful about directing to me – you get to fall in love!”.
And love is exactly what led to Watson’s accidental fall into filmmaking: growing up on set, she took in all that went on around her and learned how to apply it in other parts of her life to help her loved ones achieve their own dreams. From applying her mum’s makeup for job interviews or important occasions, to styling friends or producing photoshoots for their businesses, Watson admits it all comes from a desire for them to “see all the beauty I saw in them that they never seemed to get”.
While her foray into directing may surprise many of us, it’s something she teased previously on social media. In 2021, Watson shared photos of herself working behind the camera on Instagram, calling it “the most empowering thing I’ve learned in lockdown”.
“As a young woman, I always thought the most glamorous and exciting thing would be to be someone’s “muse”; and of course as women we are inspiring… but wow it’s something else to be able to tell your own story and other people’s,” she added.
While the film is a mere two and a half minutes, it’s definitely an impressive debut that speaks to Watson’s love of the themes she’s displaying. It’s hopeful, uplifting, and beautifully shot — so fingers crossed it’s not the last we’ll see from the star.
