The second round of the 2024 U.S. Open came to an end on Friday, leaving several notable golfers out of the weekend’s upcoming action.
Ludvig Åberg currently sits at the top of the leaderboard at five under through two rounds. Åberg is the first player to hold a 36-hole lead in their U.S. Open debut since 1985.
Bryson DeChambeau, Thomas Detry, and Patrick Cantlay are tied for second place at four under.
While the cut line fluctuated between four-over and five-over throughout the day, it eventually settled at five-over. This eliminated Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and several others.

Despite a disappointing opening round from Woods in which he carded a four-over-74, he still had a chance to make the cut on Friday.
He was within one shot of the cut line of +5 with three holes to play, although he wasn’t able to close the distance before a bogey on No. 16 made his odds of playing into the weekend much longer.
Woods has now missed the cut four times in his past five U.S. Open starts, although he was satisfied with his effort on Friday despite not achieving the result he wanted.
“Well, it was probably the highest score I could have possibly shot today,” the three-time U.S. Open champion said, per ESPN’s Mark Schlabach. “I hit a lot of good shots that just didn’t quite go my way, or I hit good putts, and then I put myself in a couple bad spots with some bad lag putts. But again, as I said, it was probably the highest score I could have shot today.”
As for Mickelson, the six-time U.S. Open runner-up was unable to make the cut and attempt to secure a career grand slam. 2024 marks the third consecutive year in which he’s missed the cut at the event. While the 53-year-old performed better on Friday compared to his disastrous first round, he was still unable to record a birdie.
PGA champions Jason Day and Justin Thomas both missed the cut as well as Viktor Hovland and Max Homa. Hovland and Homa rank as the No. 5 and No. 10 players in the world, respectively.
