Less than two months after giving birth to her son Jonathan Rosebanks, Anne Hathaway hit the red carpet for the Alice Through the Looking Glass premiere
with a beauty look so good — soft, flushed cheeks and a rosy pink lip — it earned the top spot in this week’s Look of the Week.
We’ve tapped the star’s makeup artist of nearly a decade, Chanel’s Kate Lee, for all the deets on the gorgeous makeup moment!
To complement Hathaway’s whimsical, floral-motif Christopher Kane midi dress, Lee says she “wanted to create a contrast from the pretty roses
and focus on both eyes and lips,” which is why she opted for a brown smoky eye with a “bitten lip.”
The look, which Lee describes as “fresh, modern and seductive,” had a strong focus on the lip, as the actress’ pout is the makeup pro’s favorite feature to play up.
“I’m spoiled with Annie. She has the most incredible lips and doe-like eyes,” Lee tells PeopleStyle. “But if I had to choose [a favorite feature] it would be her mouth. We can paint a perfect pout, apply a bitten stain or just leave them totally nude with balm. They are perfectly proportionate and do not require any sort of correction.”
So how did Lee get the “bitten” lip look? With a combination of two different rosy shades, she says. “I started out with a more nude beige tone and at the last minute, we decided to add more color,” she says.
After applying a nude shade, Lee then added a swipe of Chanel Rouge Coco Stylo Complete Care Lipshine in Message “muddling” the hues together.
Although the pro wasn’t going for an ombré pout, Lee says that’s the unexpected two-tone look, which was result of a last-minute touch-up by Hathaway, rounded out the entire look. “I think the two-tone [effect] may have come from Annie doing her own touch-up, but I was happy with the end result,” says the pro.
And so was the rest of Hathaway’s glam team, Lee exclaims. “This was Annie’s first red carpet just eight weeks after giving birth and we all agreed that she looked incredible,” she tells PeopleStyle. “She is such a talent, my muse and always an inspiration to me.”
