Tiger Woods doesn’t have a top-20 finish at a major since 2019, but he’s optimistic about his chances at the 2024 U.S. Open.

“I feel like I have the strength to be able to do it,” Woods told reporters Tuesday when asked if he feels like he can win the event. 

“It’s just a matter of doing it. This golf course is going to test every single aspect of your game, especially mentally, 

and just the mental discipline that it takes to play this particular golf course, it’s going to take a lot.”

Injuries have prohibited Woods from competing at the U.S. Open since 2020, and he doesn’t have a top-20 finish in the major since 2010. 

He’s missed the event seven times due to injury in the proceeding 13 years and has been cut three times. 

The 48-year-old has not competed at the U.S. Open since his 2021 car crash that caused severe leg damage.

The crash essentially ended Woods’ time as a golfer who can compete for wins at high-level tournaments. Woods does not have a single top-25 finish in a tournament since the crash and has not competed in more than three events in a calendar year.

There is course familiarity at Pinehurst that should help Woods at least compete to make the cut. He tied for third in 1999 and finished second in 2005 at the course that will house the 2024 U.S. Open.

The 15-time major winner is coming off a dreadful performance at the 2024 PGA Championship that saw him fail to make the 36-hole cut. Woods shot a 7-over 149 on a course where most of the field was going well under par.
