America’s golden girl snagged herself a gallery guy. At the height of her fame, Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence began quietly dating Cooke Maroney,
causing a deafening chorus of “Good for her” and also “Who is that?” (We can tell you: He’s a New York art gallerist at Gladstone,
which reps artists including Lena Dunham’s father, Carroll Dunham.)
The pair are now married with a baby and seemingly super happy, though neither maintain any public social media accounts,
so almost everything we have to go on about their relationship comes from Lawrence’s interviews
and the information that sources (and reps) are willing to confirm. With that in mind, here’s their love story so far.
2018
June 5, 2018: News breaks that Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney are dating and have been for a bit. Page Six’s source reports that the pair met through a mutual friend and that “the relationship has been going on a few weeks. But they have been very private and careful not to be seen together.” Lawrence’s previous relationship, with director Darren Aronofsky, ended in November 2017.
In a June 2023 Interview Magazine cover story with Cameron Diaz, Lawrence reveals that the mutual friend that introduced the pair is Gene Stupnitsky, the director and cowriter of Lawrence’s R-rated comedy No Hard Feelings. “I’ve known Gene for over a decade,” she tells Diaz. “He introduced me to my husband. He’s a fountain of hilarity.”
2019
February 5, 2019: After Lawrence is seen wearing a big diamond ring, a representative confirms her engagement.
March 22, 2019: Partiers at Pieces, a gay bar in Greenwich Village, post pictures and videos of Lawrence and Adele (and some thrilled drag queens) having tipsy fun onstage. The universe decides that this is Lawrence’s bachelorette party, though it is unconfirmed. (To be fair, Adele does mention to the crowd that J.Law is soon to wed.)
June 13, 2019: Lawrence opens up about the decision to get married in an interview on Catt Sadler’s podcast, Naked With Cat Sadler: “He’s my best friend, so I wanted to legally bind myself to him forever. And fortunately, the paperwork exists for such a thing. It’s the greatest.”
October 19, 2019: The wedding bells finally ring. The pair have a luxe, super-private wedding, tying the knot at the Belcourt in Newport, Rhode Island. According to Entertainment Tonight, Adele, Emma Stone, Amy Schumer, Kris Jenner, Corey Gamble, Ashley Olsen, Nicole Richie, Joel Madden, Cameron Diaz, Benji Madden, Sienna Miller, and David O. Russell are all in attendance. The bride and groom both wear Dior.
2021
September 9, 2021: Lawrence’s rep confirms that the couple is expecting their first child together.
November 22, 2021: Vanity Fair publishes a profile in which Lawrence opens up about domestic life with Maroney, saying, “I really enjoy going to the grocery store with him,” Lawrence says. “I don’t know why, but it fills me with a lot of joy. I think maybe because it’s almost a metaphor for marriage. ‘Okay, we’ve got this list. These are the things we need. Let’s work together and get this done.’ And I always get one of the cooking magazines, like 15 Minute Healthy Meals, and he always gives me a look like, ‘You’re not going to use that. When are you going to make that?’ And I say, ‘Yes, I am. Tuesday!’ And he’s always right, and I never do.”
December 6, 2021: Lawrence stops by The Late Show and reveals how she spent her hiatus from Hollywood and the pandemic: sex, cleaning, and cooking—or, shall we say, Cooke-ing? (Sorry, Jennifer.)
December 17, 2021: Lawrence and Maroney are spotted looking at real estate in the East Village.
2022
February 23, 2022: Public records obtained by TMZ confirms that Lawrence “recently” gave birth somewhere in Los Angeles, but exact details—like the date and gender of the child—are still unknown. Their sources also report that a baby shower happened some time near the end of January.
