John Daly is a golf legend. With 19 titles under his belt, including two Majors, it’s not surprising that new generations of golfers want to imitate him, even his not-so-good habits.
Among these is the young English golfer Charley Hull, who pulled a Daly this Tuesday during an autograph signing.
Hull is a constant presence in major LPGA tournaments and the Women’s European Tour.
Her record includes six titles, as well as second places at the Chevron Championship, the US Women’s Open, and the Women’s British Open.
Furthermore, Hull has become very popular thanks to her presence on social media, where she constantly shares selfies showing off her toned figure.
The player boasts 437,000 followers on Instagram and 632,000 on X, formerly Twitter.
Thanks to this, it is common for fans to seek her autograph on photographs or memorabilia before and during tournaments. Such was the case in the sessions prior to the US Women’s Open, where she was seen ripping a dart while attending to fans.
Hull channeling Daly
The videos and photos of the golfer signing autographs while she chain-smoked went viral, and internet users couldn’t stop commenting on the funny image.
“Charley Hull ripping a heater while signing autographs. Legend,” said one. “Dude, she just lit up another in front of me,” noted a second, and a third finally came up with the right analogy: “That’s John Daly-esque.”
The comparison seems fair as the 58-year-old Daly is constantly seen smoking while playing. Whether teeing up or trying to hole out, Daly is rarely seen without a cigar in his mouth.
The similarities don’t end there. Hull, 28, has won the LPGA Tour twice and the Ladies European Tour three times. Given a little time, she could surely match Daly in more than just the unhealthy cigarette habit.
Her rivals trolled Hull
The problem with viral photos is that you never know who may have seen them. In Hull’s case, the photo of her burning a cigarette soon found its way onto the gadgets of her competitors at the US Women’s Open.
Nelly Korda was one of the first to come across the image and she did not miss the opportunity to show it to her colleagues. In another photo that has emerged on social media, you can see Korda showing the snapshot to Hull herself and Megan Khang, who couldn’t help but laugh when they saw the image.
Hull will tee off tomorrow at 8:24 a.m. ET, looking to get rid of last year’s thorn, when she placed second, just three strokes behind the champion, Australian Minjee Lee.
