Harry Potter star, Emma Watson, stunned university students when she rocked up at Oxford in a black gown to celebrate starting her Masters degree.
The actress, 33, who played Hermione Granger in the best-selling franchise,
looked delighted to be at the city’s city’s Sheldonian Theatre on Saturday for the matriculation ceremony, which marks students’ formal admission to the university.
Sporting a long black gown with a black ribbon and a white blouse, Emma kept a low profile as she mingled with her future classmates.
Speaking about clocking the actress in the busy theatre, one student said he was shocked to see the star, who is one of the most well-known actresses in the country.
Giving his reaction to seeing the actress, he joked: “It was the first time I had seen her in a gown since the Harry Potter movies,” reports MailOnline.
Watson’s plans to study creative writing were revealed in an interview with the Financial Times in April, in which it was reported she had begun writing poetry during lockdown as well as essays on love, friendship and relationships.
Further details were then revealed by The Sun last month, which reported the Prada star’s studies would be part-time and mostly online. Speaking last month, a source said: “The course is for older adults and can be done on a part-time basis, which is perfect for Emma’s schedule. She only has to be on site for four or five days a year because she can do the rest of the course online from home. Because she’s a famous actress, she’ll have a security team looking after her whenever she has classes to go to.”
Emma spent a year at Worcester College at Oxford as an undergraduate in the 2011/12 academic year. This was during her English literature degree at Brown University in Rhode Island, US, from where she graduated in 2014.
Earlier this year, the actress opened up about her decision to take a step back from the limelight as she spoke of feeling “sad and p**** off” after rocketing to fame in the Harry Potter franchise.
Celebrating her 33rd birthday in April, she looked back at the last year of her life – after retreating from the limelight. Reflected on her time away from the world showbiz, Emma said she’d made gin, surfed, started therapy and started a women’s environmental investment fund.
In a candid post on Instagram, she said: “I stepped away from my life – I learned to surf (badly), I rode some horses (that went better), I did a lot of therapy (YESS therapy!). “My brother and I figured out how to make a gin using recycled wine grapes!?”
The actress continued: “I felt really sad and really p****d off about a lot of things. I learned more about love and being a woman. It took me three years but I have finally figured out a daily practice and can actually keep it for more than a few days in a row. I burned some things down. I eat green things now!”
