Jackie Kennedy ignored Maria Callas’ affair with Aristotle Onassis, no stranger to infidelity: pal

Jackie Kennedy’s storied marriage to Aristotle Onassis was one of the most closely scrutinized unions of the 20th century,

blending the worlds of American political royalty and European high society.

However, their relationship was far from idyllic, marred by rumors, scandals, and infidelity on Onassis’ part.

One of the most talked-about aspects of their tumultuous marriage was Onassis’ long-standing affair with the celebrated opera diva Maria Callas,

which reportedly began years before he married Jackie.

While some might expect such a betrayal to cause irreparable damage to their marriage,

Jackie’s response to the affair surprised many, as she chose to overlook it—a decision that reflected her pragmatism, resilience, and understanding of the complex man she married.

Aristotle Onassis and Maria Callas began their passionate affair in 1959, a relationship that scandalized the elite circles of the time. Both were already in relationships—Onassis was married to Athina Livanos, while Callas was tied to industrialist Giovanni Battista Meneghini. Yet, their attraction proved irresistible, and their romance became an open secret. Even after Onassis divorced Livanos and began his whirlwind courtship of Jackie Kennedy, Callas remained a significant figure in his life.

Jackie Kennedy, who married Onassis in 1968 after the assassination of her first husband, President John F. Kennedy, was well aware of her husband’s history with Callas. According to friends and confidants, she understood the emotional hold Callas had over him and the unique connection they shared. Despite this, Jackie chose to ignore the affair rather than confront it head-on—a decision that raised eyebrows but also revealed her priorities in maintaining the stability and image of her marriage.

Sources close to Jackie have suggested that her decision to overlook Onassis’ infidelity stemmed from her understanding of his nature. Onassis, a larger-than-life shipping magnate, was known for his charm, charisma, and penchant for extravagance—traits that often extended into his relationships. Jackie likely realized that challenging his longstanding affair with Callas would do little to change his behavior and might even risk fracturing the life she had built with him.

Jackie’s choice was also deeply rooted in her own sense of self-preservation and the circumstances that led her to marry Onassis in the first place. After the tragic deaths of her husband, JFK, and her brother-in-law, Robert Kennedy, Jackie was desperate for safety and stability—not just for herself, but for her children, Caroline and John Jr. Marrying Onassis, one of the wealthiest men in the world, provided her with the financial security and protection she craved. Confronting his affair with Callas might have jeopardized that arrangement.

Many have characterized Jackie and Onassis’ marriage as more of a partnership than a romantic union. While there were undoubtedly moments of affection, the relationship was reportedly built on mutual benefits rather than passion. For Jackie, Onassis provided wealth, security, and an escape from the intense public scrutiny she faced in the United States. For Onassis, marrying the former First Lady elevated his social standing to unprecedented heights, giving him an air of legitimacy and respectability he craved.

Within this framework, Jackie may have viewed Onassis’ infidelity as a lesser concern, something to be tolerated rather than battled against. She was no stranger to infidelity herself, having endured John F. Kennedy’s numerous affairs during their marriage. Her experience with JFK likely prepared her to handle Onassis’ behavior with the same grace and pragmatism.

Despite his marriage to Jackie, Onassis never severed ties with Maria Callas. Their relationship remained deeply personal and emotional, even as both moved on with other partners. Callas, too, reportedly accepted Onassis’ marriage to Jackie without severing her bond with him. It was a dynamic that spoke to the complexity of their connection and the unusual arrangement that all three parties seemed to tacitly accept.

Jackie Kennedy’s decision to ignore Onassis’ affair with Maria Callas might seem surprising to outsiders, but it reflects her unique ability to adapt to difficult circumstances and prioritize what mattered most to her at the time. She was a woman of immense strength and grace, navigating the challenges of her public and private life with remarkable composure.

While some might view her tolerance as a sign of weakness, others see it as a testament to her resilience and understanding of human nature. By focusing on the broader picture—her family’s security, her personal peace, and her public image—Jackie was able to maintain her dignity and preserve the stability she sought after years of trauma and loss.

In the end, Jackie Kennedy’s response to Onassis’ affair with Maria Callas was emblematic of her approach to life: pragmatic, strategic, and always with an eye toward the future. It was not a decision born of acceptance or indifference, but rather a calculated choice to prioritize her own well-being and that of her children above all else.
