James Corden reveals how he and Ruth Jones ‘gave up’ on Gavin & Stacey during writing for ‘terrible’ 2019 Christmas special

James Corden, co-creator and star of the beloved British sitcom Gavin & Stacey, has opened up about the challenges he and co-writer Ruth Jones faced while working on the 2019 Christmas special of the show.

In a candid revelation, Corden admitted that the duo had moments where they felt as though they had “given up” on the project, describing the initial writing process as “terrible.”

While the final product became a smashing success and drew over 17 million viewers, becoming the most-watched scripted television broadcast of the year, the road to creating the special was anything but smooth.

Corden explained that revisiting the world of Gavin & Stacey nearly a decade after the series had concluded was daunting.

The series, which originally aired from 2007 to 2010, had become a cultural phenomenon, beloved for its humor, heart, and relatable characters.

The stakes for a revival were incredibly high, and both Corden and Jones felt the weight of fan expectations. “We wanted to make something that would honor the legacy of the show,” Corden shared, “but we found ourselves doubting whether we could live up to what we had done before.”

The initial drafts of the script for the Christmas special, according to Corden, were a far cry from what he and Jones had hoped to achieve. “We kept writing scenes and then scrapping them,” he recalled. “Nothing felt right, and we started to question whether we’d lost the magic that made Gavin & Stacey what it was.” He described the process as frustrating and disheartening, admitting that there were moments when they felt like abandoning the project altogether.

For Ruth Jones, who co-created the series and played the iconic character Nessa Jenkins, the struggle was just as real. Jones echoed Corden’s sentiments, explaining that the pressure to deliver something extraordinary made it difficult to find their creative rhythm. “It’s not just about writing a funny script,” she said. “It’s about capturing the heart of these characters and the relationships that people fell in love with. That’s a tall order when you haven’t written these characters in years.”

Despite the difficulties, the pair refused to let their doubts overcome them. After months of hard work, countless rewrites, and moments of self-doubt, they finally found their footing. “We realized we had to stop overthinking it and just trust ourselves,” Corden said. “Once we got back to focusing on the characters and their relationships, everything started to fall into place.”

The resulting Christmas special was met with overwhelming acclaim, with fans praising it for staying true to the spirit of the original series while also introducing new twists and emotional moments. The cliffhanger ending, which featured Nessa proposing to Smithy, left viewers clamoring for more and reignited discussions about the possibility of a full-fledged return of the series. However, both Corden and Jones have remained hesitant about continuing the story, emphasizing the importance of preserving the show’s legacy.

Looking back, Corden now sees the struggles they faced during the writing process as a necessary part of the journey. “It was one of the hardest things we’ve ever done,” he admitted, “but it was also incredibly rewarding. It reminded us why we loved these characters and this world so much in the first place.”

The experience of creating the Christmas special has left a lasting impact on both writers, not just in terms of their creative process but also in their appreciation for the legacy of Gavin & Stacey. “The love and support we’ve received from fans over the years is incredible,” Jones said. “It’s a testament to how much this show means to people, and that’s something we’ll always treasure.”

For fans of Gavin & Stacey, the Christmas special stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of the series and the talent of its creators. While the future of the show remains uncertain, one thing is clear: James Corden and Ruth Jones poured their hearts into crafting a special that honored the past while delighting audiences anew. Their determination to overcome creative challenges and deliver a story worthy of the show’s legacy is a reminder of why Gavin & Stacey continues to hold a special place in the hearts of viewers around the world.
