Strictly Come Dancing viewing figures fall short as The Traitors becomes the BBC’s most watched reality TV show in ratings war

For years, Strictly Come Dancing reigned supreme as the BBC’s most-watched reality TV show.

However, that dominance has come to an end as The Traitors,

a suspenseful murder-mystery game hosted by Claudia Winkleman, has overtaken the long-running dance competition in viewing figures.

The Traitors Takes the Lead

According to reports, the premiere episode of The Traitors garnered an impressive 9.23 million viewers.

This figure surpasses the 9.1 million viewers who tuned in for Strictly Come Dancing’s live launch last year.

Subsequent episodes of The Traitors maintained strong numbers, with the second and third episodes drawing 8.54 million and 8.64 million viewers, respectively.

The unexpected success of the show came as a surprise to Winkleman, who admitted she was “totally terrified” about how it would be received. Reflecting on the launch, she said, “Even on Saturday, I was talking about people’s cha-chas, but in my head, I’m thinking, will they like The Traitors? You can’t possibly say it’s a phenomenon because it hasn’t gone out yet, and I’m so superstitious.”

Strictly Come Dancing’s Decline

Once a juggernaut in British television, Strictly Come Dancing has faced declining viewership in recent years. The 2024 season, despite featuring a record-breaking win by Chris McCausland, the show’s first blind contestant, struggled to capture the same audience it once did.

McCausland and his professional dance partner, Dianne Buswell, triumphed in what many called the “best-ever final,” defeating fellow finalists Tasha Ghouri, JB Gill, and Sarah Hadland. However, despite the memorable finale, the season peaked at 9.3 million viewers, a drop from the previous year’s 9.7 million. Average viewership also fell from 8.8 million to 8.6 million.

The launch of the 2024 season saw particularly disappointing numbers, with the first live show drawing just 7.1 million viewers, a significant drop from 7.8 million the year prior.

Scandals Shake Strictly

Part of Strictly’s challenges can be attributed to a series of controversies that overshadowed the 2024 season. The departure of professional dancer Giovanni Pernice followed allegations of bullying by his celebrity partner, Amanda Abbington. Although a BBC investigation cleared Pernice of most of the accusations, some complaints of verbal harassment were upheld, leading to his absence from the season.

Adding to the turmoil, professional dancer Graziano Di Prima was dismissed after allegations of misconduct with his partner, Zara McDermott. Reports claimed that Di Prima’s behavior included physical intimidation, prompting McDermott to feel unsafe during rehearsals.

These scandals tarnished Strictly’s reputation and may have contributed to its declining ratings.

The Traitors: A Winning Formula

In contrast, The Traitors has captivated audiences with its unique premise and dramatic twists. Set in a secluded location, contestants must work together to identify hidden “traitors” among them while competing in challenges to increase the prize pot. The high-stakes drama and Winkleman’s charismatic hosting have resonated with viewers, propelling the show to become the BBC’s most-watched reality series.

The success of The Traitors represents a shift in viewer preferences, as audiences gravitate toward fresh formats and gripping narratives over traditional competition shows.

The Road Ahead

While Strictly Come Dancing remains a beloved institution, its recent struggles highlight the importance of adapting to changing audience expectations. The show will need to address both its internal challenges and the evolving television landscape to reclaim its position as the BBC’s crown jewel.

Meanwhile, The Traitors has proven that risk-taking can pay off. Its meteoric rise underscores the appetite for innovative programming and cements Claudia Winkleman’s status as a versatile and engaging presenter.

As the BBC celebrates the success of The Traitors, all eyes will be on Strictly to see how it responds to this new challenge in the battle for viewership supremacy.
